state of water: brooklyn waterfronts is an oral history project that documents and archives NYC residents’ stories and experiences of flooding and how we exist in relationship with water. Through a series of interviews, conversations and interactions, this project centers how individuals, families and community members across Brooklyn neighborhoods on Lenapehoking exist in relationship with water and city infrastructure.
This form is for NYC residents to share written reflections for inclusion in the public state of water archive, as well as contact info to stay in touch with Brooklyn-based artist, Maya Simone Z. as this project develops.
To add your voice to the archive, call the
state of water community hotline at
(315) 280-8142. Read more about the project

What is the state of water community hotline?
Call the hotline at (315) 280-8142 to share your water story! These recordings will be documented for inclusion in the state of water archive. This hotline is a way to gather and share what you think about the state of water infrastructure and climate policy that affects NYC residents and communities on Lenapehoking
City government, community groups, and local organizations are addressing the changing climate in many ways. Let’s talk about how! Read about what the "state of water" project is all about below.
What is the archive about?
This archive will chronicle community members’ stories from Brooklyn neighborhoods, alongside a growing collection of research and scientific data about water infrastructure and where flooding takes place on Lenapehoking (i.e. which streets/neighborhoods are at higher risk, water depths in flood-prone areas, etc.) Much of this data is being collected by the FloodNet initiative. As of fall 2022, the archive was focused on Red Hook & Gowanus. As this project develops, I hope to expand to all five boroughs. We can together consider the different communities affected by flooding, water, and climate disaster as it compounds existing racialized class dynamics.
