NZSE is proud to introduce its first webinar series that addresses 10 key topics in Endodontics. This series intends to refresh and extend clinicians knowledge to assist them in their day-to-day practice. It will also explore the best available evidence-based literature and provide practical tips for better care of all patient groups. It also aims to provide convenient affordable education to help clinicians in their professional development plan.

The topics range from understanding pulp and periapical disease, diagnosis and treatment planning, management strategies and providing simple to complex treatment using handfiles and rotary instrumentation. NZSE is thrilled to bring together an incredible line-up of specialist endodontist who are in private and academic settings.

About Module 1: Pulpal and periapical disease, Presenter: Professor Robert Love ONZM - 23 February, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This talk provides a foundation in understanding the pathogenesis of the pulp and periapical region. It will classify pulpal disease with its histopathological and clinical features as well as describing the clinical consequences of the spread of pulpal inflammation into the periapical tissue. It will also discuss briefly the role of microorganisms and host response in disease formation and the steps involved in repair of the periapical pathosis after a successful outcome.

Biography of Professor Robert Love ONZM

Professor Robert Love ONZM is Dean and Head of School of Dentistry and Oral Health at Griffith University, a specialist endodontist and Chair of the Australasian Council of Dental Schools. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate endodontics and his prime area of research is the mechanisms involved in dentine colonisation and infection with current research focused on relating endodontic infection to the immunological response, development of antimicrobial peptides to manage endodontic biofilms and infection, and development of keratin based biomaterials to stimulate regeneration of pulp and periradicular tissues. Professor Love has published and presented extensively and was awarded the IADR ANZ Division Oral Biology award and the Alan Docking Science award. He has been involved with numerous professional organisations including the New Zealand Dental Association, New Zealand Endodontic Society, Australian Dental Association, Asia Pacific Endodontic Confederation, IADR ANZ Division and served on the editorial boards of a number of journals including the International Endodontic Journal, Dental Traumatology and Scientific Board Journal of Endodontics. He has a long history of service to dental regulatory organisations including Chair of the Dental Council of New Zealand, and roles with the Australian Dental Council, Dental Board of Australia, the National Dental Examinations Board of Canada, and the Dental Council of Hong Kong. He was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to dental accreditation, education, regulation and research.

About Module 2: Diagnosis- clinical and radiographic, Presenter: Winthrop Professor Paul Abbott AO - 30 March, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This module gives a comprehensive guide to diagnosis of pulpal and periapical disease. The current diagnostic terminology will be elaborated and presented in a simplistic manner to reduce confusion for the practitioner. It will describe how to evaluate all data from the history, clinical, and radiographic examination to form a diagnosis in order to carry out the appropriate treatment.

Biography of Winthrop Professor Paul Abbott AO

Prof. Paul Abbott is the Winthrop Professor of Clinical Dentistry at The University of Western Australia. He is a Specialist Endodontist and works in private practice on a part-time basis. Prior to taking a full-time University position in 2002, he spent 17 years in private specialist endodontic practice in Perth and Melbourne. During this time, he also held part-time academic positions at The University of Western Australia and the University of Melbourne. He was the Dean of the School of Dentistry at The University of Western Australia and Director of the Oral Health Centre of WA from 2003-2009. He has presented over 830 lectures and courses in 45 countries, many of them on numerous occasions. He has published over 203 articles in refereed journals, 24 textbook chapters and 47 Newsletter articles. Since 2015, he has been the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Dental Traumatology. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and for service to the dental profession, particularly in education and research. In 2015, the Governor-General of Australia appointed Prof. Abbott as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for “distinguished service to clinical dentistry, and to higher education, as an academic, researcher and author, to endodontics as a practitioner, and to professional organisations.”
About Module 3: Deep caries and managing the vital pulp, Presenter: Assoc. Professor Lara Friedlander - 27 April, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
Managing deep caries and the spectrum of associated pulpal response will be the focus of this module. It will help you understand the special physiologic and structural characteristics of the dentine-pulp complex and how they affect the pulpal response to injury and discuss the effects of pulpal injury in teeth with developing roots. It will also differentiate reparative and reactionary dentine and recognize the indications, contraindications, and expected outcomes of the vital pulp therapy protocols. It will highlight the techniques for vital pulp therapy and its prognosis.

Biography of Assoc. Professor Lara Friedlander

Lara Friedlander Qualified From The University Of Otago In 1992. Thereafter She Worked In Hospitals And General Practice Whilst Completing Her Fellowship With The Racds. In 1999, Lara Completed Her Specialist Training In Endodontics At The University Of Otago, And Since 2008 Has Been A Full Time Senior Lecturer In Endodontics And Has Completed A Phd In Pulp Angiogenesis And Regenerative Healing In Immature Permanent Teeth. She Co-Ordinates Undergraduate And Postgraduate Clinical Teaching In Endodontics And Has Been Responsible For Introducing And Delivering Advanced Endodontic Modules In Rotary Endodontics Into The Undergraduate Bds Programme. She Was Invited To Switzerland To Present The Outcomes Of This Published Work With Other International Universities. Lara Is A An Examiner For The Final Racds General Practice Examination And Has Lectured Internationally With Publications And Research Interests In Endodontic Education And Improving Clinical Teaching And Is An Active Member Of The Clinical Research And Oral Immunopathology Research Groups Within The Sir John Walsh Research Institute At The Faculty Of Dentistry. Most Recently Lara Has Had Key Involvements In The Establishment Of New Zealand’s First Practice Based Research Network (Pbrn) Known As Arch (Applied Research Through Clinicians’ Hands) Which Aims To Reduce Translation Of Research Into Clinically Useful Initiatives That Improve Patient Treatment Outcomes In Dental Practices; And With Research Questions Generated In The Real World By Nz Clinicians. She Has Been Lead Researcher In The First Three Pbrn Projects Related To Vital Pulp Therapy Practices In New Zealand.
About Module 4: Pretreatment assessment - Case difficulty, Anatomy and Root canal access, Presenter: Dr Finn Gilroy - 25 May, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This module will highlight the importance and the factors that influence the degree of difficulty of a case prior to commencing any treatment. It will give a clear understanding on best cases for general practitioners to treat (skill dependent) and the ones to refer. The basic anatomy of the roots and their root canals will be discussed to show what access form is required to enter into the root canal system. The concept of peri-cervical dentine will be also be discussed along with the factors that will determine the ultimate outcome by fulfilling the needs of the operator, the restoration, and the tooth.

About Module 5: Canal disinfection (irrigants, lubricants, medicaments), Presenter: Dr Scott Turner - 22 June, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This module will outline the rationale and role of common chemicals and medicaments used in root canal therapy. It will present evidence on how these disinfectants work as well as their impact on the biofilm. It will highlight the impact of time, agitation, pH level and surrounding factors that influences efficacy. It will describe how diagnoses can affect disinfection protocols as well as risk mitigation, safety of disinfectants and how to manage common and rare complications.

Biography of Dr Scott Turner

Scott was born in Christchurch and attended Otago University where he received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1995. Following this, he worked in Hamilton for two years, the first as a maxillo-facial house surgeon in Hamilton and then in private practice. He then moved to the UK, where he worked in private practice in Kingston, Surrey for the next 4 years. He developed his passion for endodontics throughout this period, attending many courses and lectures by leading endodontists while focusing on his endodontic techniques and skills. He returned to New Zealand to undertake the Master of Dental Surgery programme at Otago University and graduated MDS with Distinction in Endodontics in 2003. Scott worked in Christchurch for two and a half years at a specialist endodontic practice before moving to Wellington to set up his own practice.
About Module 6: Root canal preparation, Presenter: Dr Mike Gordon - 27 July, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
Mechanical preparation of the root canal system is a critical step to predictable endodontic treatment outcome. This module will explore techniques of shaping the root canals (regular and irregular) with modern instruments, choosing the appropriate instrument size and determining the correct preparation length. It will also describe techniques for negotiating severely curved, “blocked,” “ledged,” or constricted canals.

Biography of Dr Mike Gordon

Mike is currently working in specialist practice in Hamilton. He graduated BDS from the University of Otago in 1990. After working and owning a share in a private practice in Hamilton for 10 years Mike completed a  Masters of Dental Surgery in Endodontics at the University of Otago graduating in 2004 –with Distinction. He gained membership of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in endodontics in 2005. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and is actively involved in running continuing education courses and lectures in New Zealand and Australia. He currently reviews articles for the Australian Endodontic Journal, Australian Dental Journal and the New Zealand Dental Journal. He has a special interest in evolving technology in endodontics and the operating microscope. Mike is a past President of the Waikato Branch of the NZDA, current Chairman of the NZ Specialist Endodontists  and has memberships with The NZ Society of Endodontics, The Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists and the International Association of Dental Traumatology.
About Module 7: Root canal obturation, Presenter: Professor Nick Chandler - 31 August, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This module will focus on the purpose of obturation. It will look at the properties of the common materials used in obturation and discuss its advantages and disadvantages. It will highlight the techniques in obturating the root canals with these common materials and will give an insight on hydraulic calcium silicate cements especially type 5 (eg. Endosequence).

Biography of Professor Nick Chandler

Nick trained at Guy's Hospital in London, initially going into general dental practice in North London. He then moved to Manchester to be Senior House Officer at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Taking an academic route he spent 5 further years in Manchester as Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry.  He returned to NZ in 1987 to a Lecturer position at Otago, and completed a London PhD as an external student in 2005. Nick has published 120 papers and 78 abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and has chapters in Ingle’s Endodontics (2010,2019), Harty’s Endodontics in Clinical Practice (2010,2017), Contemporary Restoration of Endodontically Treated Teeth (2013), Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (2014) and Pathways of the Pulp (2016, 2021). He has contributed a chapter to a new textbook, Endodontic Materials in Clinical Practice, due in the next few months. In 2016 he was awarded the Alan Docking International Association for Dental Research Science Award for his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of dental research.  Retiring last year, Nick retains his association with the University as an honorary Professor and is Editor of the New Zealand Dental Journal.

About Module 8: Restoration of the root filled tooth, Presenter: Dr David Parkins - 28 September, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
Mo This module will highlight the importance of a coronal seal and an adequate definitive restoration and describe the main factors involved in the survival of root-filled teeth. It will outline indications for post placement in anterior and posterior teeth, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of direct and indirect restorations and describe techniques for restoring an access opening through an existing restoration. It will also seek to link the restoration of the root-filled tooth to the endodontic prognosis.

Biography of Dr David Parkins

David graduated with a BDS in 1980 from the University of Otago, and completed his post graduate studies in Endodontics in 1986 at the Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas, USA. There David trained with two of the world’s leading authorities on Endodontics at a pivotal time in the development of this specialist field. Returning in 1986, David established New Zealand’s first private specialist Endodontic Practice, in Auckland where he continues to practice today. He is a past president of the NZ Society of Endodontics, The Auckland Dental Association, and the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontics. David is an active member of the New Zealand Dental Association, Fellow of the New Zealand Dental Association, New Zealand Society of Endodontics, Australian Society of Endodontology, Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontics, International Association of Dental Traumatology and the American Association of Endodontics. He has presented numerous lectures and hands-on training courses in endodontics and remains active in the area of continuing professional development throughout New Zealand and overseas.

About Module 9: Nonsurgical Endodontic Retreatment, Presenter: Assoc. Professor Peter Cathro - 26 October, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This module will help us recognise causes of the initial root canal therapy failure that require nonsurgical endodontic retreatment and will discuss the treatment options available for teeth requiring retreatment including; indications and contraindications, risks and benefits and ultimately the prognosis and outcome of the retreatment. There will be a brief outline of the techniques and instruments used in retreatments.

Biography of Assoc. Professor  Peter Cathro

Upon completion of his specialist training in Endodontics (1994), Peter worked as an endodontist in full time private practice in Melbourne and then in Auckland. Peter later took a position as a Senior Lecturer at Otago University before becoming Head of Discipline at the University of Adelaide for seven years. Peter has returned to Otago University and is Head of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students, Peter has lectured extensively at international conferences and given numerous endodontic hands-on courses throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Peter completed his PhD in microbiology and his current research interests are in microbial adaptation and endodontic applications of hydroxyapatite. Peter is a reviewer for five peer-reviewed journals.

About Module 10: Apical Surgery, Presenter: Dr Patrick Caldwell - 16 November, 7:30 – 9:15pm (NZT)
This is the final module of the symposia and will discuss the role of endodontic surgery and its nuances in treatment planning for a patient. It will briefly describe the step-by-step procedures involved in periapical surgery, including those for incision and reflection, access to the apex, apical curettage, root-end resection, root-end preparation and filling, flap replacement, and suturing.

Biography of Dr Patrick Caldwell

Patrick Caldwell is a registered specialist in Endodontics. He graduated in Dentistry with Honours from the University of Queensland in 1998 and went on to work for the Royal Australian Navy, both ashore and at sea. During this time he undertook advanced training in restorative dentistry and in 2002 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.
In 2003 Patrick began a three year, full-time training program in endodontic therapy and microsurgery, graduating with a Masters of Dental Science in Endodontics. He has since gone on to complete additional advanced training, graduating with a Masters of Clinical Dentistry in Implant Dentistry. In 2006, he returned to work with the Royal Australian Navy and was also engaged as a Visiting Specialist at the Sydney Dental Hospital. In 2009 Patrick moved to Shanghai, China where he was the only Endodontist in a city of 21 million people. Upon his return from Shanghai, Patrick opened Brisbane Microsurgical Endodontics in South Brisbane, where he continued to practice for seven years until 2018. Patrick currently practices at the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia.
