2024 Queer Cal Pals (QCP) - Pal Application
Queer Cal Pals is a program offered by the Gender Equity Resource Center to connect incoming queer and trans students to their communities on campus. Both incoming undergraduate freshmen and incoming undergraduate transfer students are encouraged to apply! Incoming students are referred to as Pals and are matched with a Buddy -- a current student that is involved in QT spaces and trained on campus resources -- with the goal of becoming a successful supported Berkeley student. Being a Pal is a semester long commitment and requires attendance at our various events described further in the application. Pals have the opportunity to become Buddies after the Fall semester.

QCP programming will be in person and does not require any fees to participate. QCP and GenEq are committed to making all programming accessible, so please inform us of any needs or conflicts you anticipate.

This application will close on Friday, August 23rd, 2024 at 11:59pm.  You will receive an email by August 26th, 2024, regarding your application status.

Contact qcp@berkeley.edu for any questions and concerns.

What identities, experiences, or needs are important to you? Queer Cal Pals strives to match you with someone that shares salient identities with you, so feel free to share any information that can help us find you the best possible Buddy!  Our Buddy cohort holds many intersecting identities so please do not hesitate to share details that may seem unrelated to your LGBTQ+ identity. This information is kept private and will only be viewed by the QCP coordinators and our supervisor. *
EXAMPLE:  I am a non-binary lesbian from the suburbs.  I'm Mexican-American and I sometimes feel excluded from my community because I don't speak Spanish and I'm not Catholic.  I am on financial aid.
Intended Major(s) & Minor(s) *
Please share any extracurricular interests or involvements you enjoy! *
How would a friend describe you in five words? *
Why do you want to be a part of the program? What do you hope to get from the experience and what do you hope to contribute? *
QCP aims to provide you with a current student who will help you navigate your first semester at Cal. What are you looking for in a Buddy? Do you anticipate any particular needs or concerns that your Buddy could help you navigate? *
EXAMPLE: I am a student with a disability so I would look for someone that is familiar with the Disabled Students Program and doing classes with accommodations. I'm an introvert and would love a Buddy that would bring me out of my shell.
How would you describe your social energy and capacity? How do you want to explore new environments, i.e. campus, Berkeley, the Bay Area? *
EXAMPLE: I am generally extroverted, but I prefer to socialize in small groups and in small bursts of 1-3 hours. I prefer doing low-energy activities when socializing, like going out to eat.
Throughout the duration of the program, Pals will engage in various activities with their Buddy. Participation in the program may include:
• sitting and participating in small groups in person
• traveling across campus
• traveling off campus using public transportation (buses, trains, etc.)
• some walking tours
• Virtually participating in small Zoom groups
• Both in person and/or virtually listening to presentations and reading written materials
• Both in person and/or virtually attending social events, such as viewing parties, game nights, etc.

On Sunday, September 8st, 2024, from 10am-1pm PST, we will be hosting a mandatory Buddy + Pal Matching Ceremony. This is very important to your Buddy assignment and QCP experience because this is where you will meet all Pals and Buddies in the program so we can successfully pair you with another student.  Are you able to attend this event? *
Commitment to participate and communicate changes. *
I agree to being paired with a returning student. I recognize that buddies are volunteering their time and I agree to participate as fully as time allots. Furthermore, I agree to informing my buddy or the QCP coordinators should my commitment to QCP change for any reason (ex: class/study time, athletics, family, etc)
Please list any dietary restrictions you may have -- QCP provides food for many of our events, and we want to ensure everyone has something to eat. *
Required
Do you have any access needs or accommodations that would support your participation in the program? *
This includes public health concerns, physical concerns, sensory concerns, etc.
What shirt size are you?  Program participants will receive a QCP sweater. *
