We are trying to identify people who rely on septic systems for their wastewater treatment in Northeast GA to engage in our work. To study septic function, we will collect soil samples and will replace them after collection.  We will make notes and measurements about the topography and vegetation on your property using visual observations and photographs. We will set up soil-water collection instruments in your leach field, and we will sample these over the course of several months. Sampling will require researcher brief access (<1 hour) to your property after major rainstorms and/or monthly, whichever is most frequent. We will contact you before our visits, but will not need to interact with you during our visits unless you would like to speak with us. Our team will be wearing face masks and following guidelines for the use of personal protective gear and behaviors to limit the spread of COVID-19 as outlined by the CDC.

Though it will vary with the type of study we are conducting, we are also hoping to incentivize participants by supporting some septic maintenance costs (i.e., funds to support the tank to be pumped)  in exchange for your engagement in our investigation. We are hoping the results of this study will help inform the development of proactive management strategies to support residents in maintaining their septic systems.
