Arkansas Peace Week Essay Contest Sign Up 2024
Arkansas Peace Week Essay contest is open to 7th - 12th grade students in Arkansas, USA.

Essay should address the following theme:
  • The United States provides billions of dollars in military aid for ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Israel, and Palestine. Is military aid a good tool for promoting peace and human rights in the world? If yes, how? If no, why not?
    In your response, you may choose to address:
    •    (How) is US aid effective, or not effective, in promoting peace and human rights in these regions?
    •    Are there other ways that we, as a country or as individuals, can promote peace in these regions?
    •    Can violence lead to peace? What in your experience informs your answer to this question? 
Essays must be 500 words or fewer.  Essays may be in any style (thesis or prose, academic or literary), as long as the content is in line with the theme.

Schools, teachers, faith groups and other youth organizations are encouraged to sponsor and guide students with their submissions.  We encourage schools to conduct their own local contest during Arkansas Peace Week, September 15 - 22.  Local contest winner’s entries can be submitted into our state wide competition.  

AWARDS
Awards will be presented for six age groups: 7th grade through 12th grade.

1st Place winners in each grade will receive $100
2nd Place winners in each grade will receive $50
3rd Place winners in each grade will receive $25

Submissions will be judged on the basis of following criteria:
 -Understanding of the theme: To what extent did the writer demonstrate a clear understanding of the theme and provide a clear and detailed response?
 -Original thinking relative to the topic: To what extent was the original thinking relative to the subject?
 -Effectiveness in presenting a point-of-view: To what extent did the writer present his/her point of view?

SUBMITAL:
Entries must be submitted by September 27, 2024. To register for the contest, complete this online form.   Entries must be submitted online. 

Essays will be judge anonymously , do not include your name  in the body of your essay.  Type or paste your essay in the form below.  Entries submitted by postal mail or e-mail are not accepted.  Submittal of attachments or links to separate documents is not allowed. We recommend adding extra lines between paragraphs, but  most other text formatting is not available in the form. 

Only one entry per person is accepted.  Essays must be original: plagiarized or IA generated entries will be rejected.  Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.

Finalists will be announced in mid-October by email and posted on our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/arkansaspeaceweek.   

Award winners will be announced at the Arkansas State Capitol on November 16, 2024. Certificates and prizes will be mailed to the finalists that are not able to attend the event at the State Capitol.

Submitters will relinquish and transfer to Arkansas Peace Week usage rights for submitted content.  Arkansas Peace Week may, without further approval, exhibit, distribute, edit, reproduce, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and broadcast the submitted content.
