THE KAT ARTIST RESIDENCY for LITERARY, VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTISTS
Welcome to the tallest, smallest apartment for Artist Residencies: the Kallenberg Artist Tower (KAT)! Located at the Central ARTSTATION, the home of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and center for the presentation, exhibition, performance, creation of and education about the Arts, the KAT is located at 801 Crockett Street in Downtown Shreveport in the heart of Shreveport Common, destined to become the destination for UNexpected, Unprecedented, UNabashed, experiences that form an UNcommon Cultural Community.

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council offers an annual week-long “KAT” Residency for a Visual Artist, a Performing Artist, and a Literary Artist. This application is open exclusively to Artists who reside in Louisiana.
The selected Artists will be awarded a one-week Retreat/Residency in the KAT, with its unique architecture and historical significance. The apartment is fully equipped with a stocked kitchen, 1.5 baths, a queen-sized bed, living room, and a rooftop that provides a panoramic view of downtown Shreveport and the Shreveport Common neighborhood. Each floor of the KAT is a separate room… there are five floors and a rooftop; there is not an elevator.  The stairs are quite manageable; however, each element of the space is on a different floor.

The Northwest, Lousiana Arts community wants to hear your thoughts and follow your career progress as well as learn a “how to” tip in one specific technique that you have mastered in order to increase the cadre of strategies for success! Therefore, the Shreveport Regional Arts Council provides each selected Artist-in-Residence a $500 stipend for the week with the caveat that the Artist will participate in an Artist Talk and Workshop. Usually, these are two separate conversations.  While in the midst of the Pandemic, we are all experimenting with new approaches to the communication/sharing.

Travel expenses and meals are not included - though you’ll enjoy a hosted lunch or dinner with the SRAC team!

The KAT ARTIST Residency includes:

1. One week - 7 nights (Sunday – Saturday; or negotiated with you) in the historic and restored five-story KAT apartment. (The Artist must be comfortable with stairs; the building has five floors and stairwell to the rooftop. There is not an elevator.)

2. One workshop focused on a specific topic geared to the community of Northwest Louisiana area artists.

3. One “Artist’s Talk” geared for the public that shares your creative journey.

4. $500 stipend; payable upon departure.

Selection Process:

1. Applications are due December 17, 2022.
TWO Resident Artists for 2022 will be selected and announced by January 14, 2022 at the January NWLA Artists Roster Meeting held by zoom or in person.

2. The selection process will be determined by an expert professional panel for each discipline; often one of the Critics brought in to review Artists’ Progress will review the applications. Caddo Parish Poet Laureate Poetic X oversees the selection of jurors.

3. Competitive applicants will have samples of work that have been published, performed, or exhibited; works in progress; and an articulated goal for the Residency.

4. Selected artists suggest the top three weeks in 2022 for their residency in the KAT Tower, and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council will confirm a mutually agreeable week with the selected Artists.

The selection committee reserves the option to either re-open applications or award more than two Artists in a Discipline if Artists-in-Residency are not determined from the first pool of applicants. All received applications for the year will also be included in the second pool of applicants.
