Emoting & Vitality Project Participant Info Sheet

"Emoting and Vitality" Project: A Cross-Cultural Perspective on the Emoting Performance Storytelling of the Native American Pow Wow Dance and the Historically Black College & University Band Dance Genres Through a PERMA-V Comparison Lens. The Trinity Laban Research Ethics Committee has reviewed and approved the Project.

Thank you for considering taking part in my research study. Before you decide, it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. There will be a virtual call to address any questions or concerns. Do take some time to decide whether you wish to take part.

What is the purpose of the project?  The aims of this research will be to (1) explore how each the Native American Pow Wow and HBCU band dance cultures approach emoting before and after a performance storytelling and (2) analyze this through a cross-cultural perspective in the psychological processes behind emoting through the PERMA-V wellbeing theory.

Do I have to take part? It is up to you! If you do decide to take part, you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time, without penalty or loss of benefits, and without giving a reason. If you do decide to volunteer, please note that you must be:

Does not apply to me
Between 13 - 99 years of age, ethical considerations for ages 13-16 years with parental consent.
Native American Pow Wow participants only: Currently in training and performing in a Pow Wow for at least two years.
HBCU Band participants only: enrolled and an active member of the marching band or auxiliary team, be an alumnus, or band director/choreographer/assistant

What do I have to do in this project? There will be two groups: G1) performers will complete two surveys and two small group interviews that consist of open-ended questions about your experiences, feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about their emotional preparedness for a performance before and after the event in addition to be observed during a performance. G2) All participants will be divided by ‘Performers’, ‘Dancing Musician/Singers’, and ‘Storytellers’ will partake in a series of focus groups discussing, questionnaires, and short surveys on each of the six PERMA-V wellbeing components (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, and Vitality) as it relates to their community and dance culture.

*

How long is this project take? G1) Performers will take a no more than 1.5 days leading up to a performance and no longer than a day after a performance. G2) The three groups of participants must be able to commit to participating in the interview or focus groups. It is possible to complete within one (1) day up to three (3) days maximum. There will be a strong possibility the focus groups will be online unless an institution requests and collaborate for in-person focus groups onsite.

What are the possible benefits of taking part? The research will increase the information available about underrepresented dance genres and dance cultures that generally go unnoticed while maintaining integrity and no appropriation, showing respect to various cultures. The Emoting & Vitality Project research will lessen the risk of mistrust and false ownership by another culture. In other words, deconstructing the theme of appropriation leads to approximation, assimilation, valuing, and devaluing of mimicked cultures for personal gain, only to leave the dancing body victimized by the soft bigotry of low expectations (Dixon Gottschild, B., 2005).

What is the breakdown of each group in the second part of the research project?

There will be three groups for the second part of the research project:

  1. Performers: Primarily dancers only ranging from the marching band's auxiliary teams and drum majors to Native Indigenous performers.
  2. Dancing Musician/Singers: Only marching band members that play instruments while performing movement and host drum players all while singing.
  3. Storytellers: These will be the people that keep and pass down the culture's legacy. Director of bands, assistants, group leaders, alumni, elders, Pow Wow announcers, and representatives of collaborating institutions or organizations.

Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential? All information which is collected during the research will be codified to ensure anonymity for research purposes only. The information (data) collected will be treated as anonymous and confidential. Only the research, supervisor, and Head of Department/Programme Leader will have access to it.  If there is an aspect of the study which concerns you, you may make a complaint via the researcher Zahra.c.22.383@edu.trinitylaban.ac.edu or her supervisor Lucia Piquero l.piquero@trinitylaban.ac.uk

Are you an institution or organization that may be interested in being part of the research project? Please note of the research questions with the aims:

RQ1. How does the emoting preparedness compare between the Native American dancers and the HBCU Band dancers leading up to a performance storytelling event?

1.1.      Aim: Illustrate how each of the respective dance cultures encompass the richness to                                            emoting before and after a performance storytelling.

1.1.1.   IV = (1) Native American dancers, (2) HBCU Band dancers.

1.1.2.   DV = (1) emoting preparedness (the aspects of emotion awareness) based on six                                                continuous outcome variables, (2) two time points (before and after their performance                                        storytelling event).

RQ2. What is the difference in the wellbeing components and shared insights when comparing two cultural performing groups from the PERMA-V Wellbeing?

2.1.      Analyse the cross-cultural perspective in the psychological processes through the                                               PERMA-V wellbeing theory.

2.1.1.   IV = Two cultural sample groups that will be divided into smaller groups based on the                                         number of participants.

2.1.2.   DV = Outcome on each of the six PERMA-V components.
