Details for your participation in Nutcracker auditions

Please do not attend if you have cold symptoms, or if anyone in your household is currently positive for COVID. Email us for advice if you cannot be present for the September 11 audition (dance@ashevilleballet.com).

For the health and safety of dancers and their families, everyone will wear masks while in the building for the auditions.

Please note that the auditions will be filmed so that the artistic team members may review the material.

Audition schedule is outlined below:

1:00pm ages 4 – First Grade

1:15pm Second - Fourth Grade

1:30pm Fifth – Sixth Grade

2:00pm Everyone Seventh Grade – senior adult. Auditions will begin with a Ballet technique class (if you are a beginner, and unsure, email us to ask advice).

3:00pm-4:45pm Everyone Seventh Grade – senior adult will stay for auditions for various Modern, Contemporary, and Ballet roles and for adult roles. Auditions for Pointe roles will likely occur at the very end of the audition.

Parts are available for all dancers from all regional studios for ages 4 to senior adults. Casting will be announced the week of September 21st.

All performers must be taking at least two technique classes per week, at any studio, one of which should be Ballet (dancers ages 4-9 may take only one class per week; for dancers ages 7-9, it should be Ballet).

Please plan to arrive a bit early to find parking. Wear your mask the entire time you are inside. Please arrive in your dance clothes, wash your hands, remove your street shoes, and take your belongings with you into the studio, where you’ll place them by the back door. When your audition is finished, please leave out the back door (parents, please pick up your children at the back door nearest the creek). Parents of 4 to 8-year-olds may wait in the lobby if your child would feel more comfortable that way, and parents of 4 to 6-year-olds may come into the studio IF your little one looks like they need you (masked, please). The audition is closed to any other observers, but family members may come inside to use the restrooms.

Please note the following COVID-related protocols, and carefully consider your wish to participate in the Nutcracker within this framework. Please be aware that our protocols may need to evolve, and that updates will be made as needed.

MASKS:

Masks are optional in many Nutcracker rehearsals at this time, but please be aware that masks could be required at any point during the rehearsal process, for specific choreographers, or in light of any specific instances of exposure.

Dancers in Nutcracker rehearsals with 8 or more individuals present will be asked to wear masks. (Eight or more persons gathered in the lobby will also be asked to wear masks.)

After November 24th (Thanksgiving), all dancers will be masked at all times while in rehearsal, on site at our studio, as well as at all times while not actively performing on stage at Diana Wortham.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS:

All Nutcracker dancers, regardless of vaccination status, will need to submit negative tests (at-home or lab-conducted, whatever is easiest and least costly for you) on the following dates:

Saturday, November 26
Thursday, December 1
Monday, December 5
Friday, December 8

CASTING:

Casting will be announced around September 21st (rehearsals begin as early as Friday, September 23, for some roles). Please make a filter to send emails from dance@ashevilleballet.com to your inbox every time.

Please be aware, there may be situations in which we have to remove whole groups of dancers due to COVID exposures, so please go into this production with the awareness that there could be factors outside your or our control that prevent you from performing on a given date. If you are sick with any possible COVID symptoms (or if anyone in your household is positive for COVID), you will be asked stay home. There may be Zoom rehearsals happening on occasion.

Please review our current COVID guidelines for being in the space:

COVID guidelines for Nutcracker rehearsals as of 8/12/22

1) No one may enter the building who may have been exposed to COVID-19, or who has a fever, sore throat, cough, loss of taste or smell, or shortness of breath.

If you have any of these symptoms, you’ll need a negative COVID test or a note from your doctor that your symptoms are not contagious.

If anyone in your household (with whom you share living/restroom quarters) has symptoms or a positive COVID case, please let us know. We will likely ask you to wait 5 days and show a negative COVID test before returning to rehearsal.

2) If a dancer is coughing in rehearsal, the choreographer will ask them to wear a mask, for everyone’s well-being and peace of mind.

**Your entry into the space each day will serve as your agreement that you have asked yourselves health screening questions and that you have no reason to believe that you or anyone with whom you have had close contact might be sick. Thank you for your care for your dance community.**

3) Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer (available in the lobby, by the back door nearest the creek, and by the studio stairs) frequently. We are asking that everyone wash or sanitize their hands as soon as they arrive, and sanitize their hands frequently, especially after touching their masks, shoes, or faces. There will be sanitizer available at the back door; be sure to sanitize when you leave the building.

4) Bring your own water from home. The drinking fountain will not be in use (it has been taped off and the water turned off for everyone’s safety). If you forget your water bottle, there are cups and gallons of water in the lobby.

5) Parents, siblings, and friends will enter the studio or the lobby only to use the restrooms. You will drop your children off at the front door at the start of rehearsal, and pick them up at the back door (nearest the creek) at the end of rehearsal – parents must be on time at the end of rehearsal. Please wait in your car during the rehearsal; no child under age 9 may be dropped off without express permission from a choreographer or staff member. Office staff may not be on site. Eight or more persons in the lobby will also be asked to wear masks.

6) No food at all is allowed in the building during this time, and the fridge will not be in use. Staff for the usual cleanup is not on site. Please keep food in your car.

7) Please carefully note the order of operations for your time at the studio.

a. Before you arrive, be sure that you have no cold symptoms.

b. Five minutes before your rehearsal time, you may walk your child to the front door, or watch until they have gone inside (Winter Creature parents, we understand you may need to walk your children inside).

c. Dancers will wash (20 seconds) and/or sanitize (30 seconds) their hands immediately upon entering the building, change their shoes, and proceed directly to the studio. You may bag your street shoes and place them by the exit door.

d. Please arrive in your dance clothes and warm-ups. Dressing rooms will not be in use. Bring in minimal belongings and keep everything with you downstairs in the studio so that after rehearsal, you only have to put on your warmups, sanitize your hands, and leave via the back door.

e. Dancers must maintain 6 feet of social distance whenever possible.

f. At the end of rehearsal, dancers may use the restroom if needed, wash their hands, or use hand sanitizer (there will be some provided at the back door).

g. Dancers will replace their shoes at the far side of the studio and exit via the back door (nearest the creek). Please tell your choreographer when you are leaving the building, so they can watch you to your car. Or, parents, you may also walk up to the back door to pick up your children. Parents, it is crucial that you be on time to pick up your children. If you have to be late, please text Teresa or your choreographer.

**Remember, no parent or sibling may hang out in the lobby or in the dressing rooms. Dancers may wait in the lobby if they have a short break between rehearsals. If you need to make a special arrangement, chat with Teresa. We ask that all dancers and parents be responsible for themselves and follow the rules carefully. Everyone’s health and peace of mind are important to us.**
