Book Talk Club: General Disclaimer
for SY22-23
A variety of texts that may be discussed or suggested by students and book talk sponsors are written in various genres surrounding historical events and literary themes. These texts are intended to incorporate relevant social
and cultural perspectives which act as a framework to garner holistically
vigorous discussions and allow students to explore ideas in literature while sharing their passion for literature.
The texts discussed and suggested by students and club sponsors may reflect ideas,
terminology, values, and perspectives that were historically accurate and
reflective of the cultural experiences, societal issues, and authorial context
of the time period in which they were written.
The ideas, words, themes, and
values reflected in these texts are not meant in any way to be reflective of
the ideas, words, themes, or values supported by Stride, Oklahoma Virtual
Charter Academy, or the book talk club sponsors suggesting or discussing the texts in the
classroom.
The texts are solely and
objectively used as resources to practice the skills of critical thinking by
analyzing literature. All teacher/sponsor-guided discussions will be kept
within the guidelines of laws as set out by the United States and Oklahoma
State constitutions.
Some language and perspectives may
be portrayed in texts which are not considered appropriate or applicable
within modern accepted social and cultural values, including but not limited to
racial/social/cultural terminology, social theories, and perspectives of
different groups of people. The views and opinions expressed in these texts are
those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of
any OVCA or Stride entities. All diligence will be made
in creating a safe and explorative discussion from the point of view of an
objective observer.
Students may contribute their
thoughts and perspectives as part of the conversation as long as these
perspectives add to the value of the skills being practiced and do not
perpetuate or promote hate, discrimination, or devaluing of any group of people
in any way.
Per Stride and OVCA board policy,
if a student feels uncomfortable reading or discussing the texts that become subject material in our book talk they may choose to not participate in that discussion and/or leave that club session. They can return at any time. The parent and/or legal guardian may also email club sponsors to let them know that your student is opting out of a discussion. Our book talk club respects and supports all parent wishes regarding reading material.
Proceeding with a book talk discussion without a prior or immediate objection to the suggested book list and/or student led material discussed during a session will be acknowledgement that the parent/legal guardian chooses and allows their student to participate.
