Book Talk Club Permission Form & Registration
By filling out this survey, you are giving permission for your student to become a member of the OVCA High School Book Club.
Membership of this club entails participation by attending monthly meetings to discuss and analyze favorite books!
The books discussed are chosen by students. Stipulations are that all books and discussions must be school appropriate and follow school and state guidelines for appropriate reading. We encourage students to expand their reading by providing a list of academic and classic popular literature. A few books on the list may contain some content and themes that are mature and/or controversial. All books are optional to read. Our goal for this club is to garner discussion and analysis of relevant topics, all while enjoying reading for fun!
Our book club will be a safe place of mutual respect, tolerance, and critical analysis of popular literature outside the classroom.
After filling out this survey and submitting it, your student will become an official member of the OVCA Book club.

I give permission for my student to join the OVCA Book Club. I understand that as a member, my student's active participation is encouraged. I agree to allow my student to attend monthly meetings to discuss books of their own choosing with other students and club sponsors. I understand that any suggested books during club sessions are optional for my student to read.
*
I understand that books that are suggested or discussed in the club may contain mature and/or controversial themes, and I am okay with allowing my student to attend these sessions and have access to links of free books that may or may not cover such subject material. I will make sure my student understands that they do not have to read any of the books discussed-- it is up to my (the parent) and my student's discretion. I understand that my student will need to address these books with an open and respectful mind. *
I understand that the book talk club sponsors may need to make changes to the suggested book list, book discussions, and book club expectations as needed.   *
I agree to make sure that my student understands that in order to maintain the integrity of Book Talk Club as a safe place for discussion, personal opinions, and different values, my student will approach books, discussions, and other members with mutual respect, tolerance, and kindness. Failure to do so will incur consequences such as losing club membership and/or disciplinary action from school administration, based on the severity of the infraction. *
I understand that my student's participation in Book Talk Club is purely extra-curricular and will not replace or hinder any academic requirements for my schooling. *

Book Talk Club: General Disclaimer for SY22-23

A variety of texts that may be discussed or suggested by students and book talk sponsors are written in various genres surrounding historical events and literary themes. These texts are intended to incorporate relevant social and cultural perspectives which act as a framework to garner holistically vigorous discussions and allow students to explore ideas in literature while sharing their passion for literature.

The texts discussed and suggested by students and club sponsors may reflect ideas, terminology, values, and perspectives that were historically accurate and reflective of the cultural experiences, societal issues, and authorial context of the time period in which they were written.

The ideas, words, themes, and values reflected in these texts are not meant in any way to be reflective of the ideas, words, themes, or values supported by Stride, Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy, or the book talk club sponsors suggesting or discussing the texts in the classroom.

The texts are solely and objectively used as resources to practice the skills of critical thinking by analyzing literature. All teacher/sponsor-guided discussions will be kept within the guidelines of laws as set out by the United States and Oklahoma State constitutions.

Some language and perspectives may be portrayed in texts which are not considered appropriate or applicable within modern accepted social and cultural values, including but not limited to racial/social/cultural terminology, social theories, and perspectives of different groups of people. The views and opinions expressed in these texts are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of any OVCA or Stride entities. All diligence will be made in creating a safe and explorative discussion from the point of view of an objective observer.

Students may contribute their thoughts and perspectives as part of the conversation as long as these perspectives add to the value of the skills being practiced and do not perpetuate or promote hate, discrimination, or devaluing of any group of people in any way.

Per Stride and OVCA board policy, if a student feels uncomfortable reading or discussing the texts that become subject material in our book talk they may choose to not participate in that discussion and/or leave that club session. They can return at any time. The parent and/or legal guardian may also email club sponsors to let them know that your student is opting out of a discussion. Our book talk club respects and supports all parent wishes regarding reading material.

Proceeding with a book talk discussion without a prior or immediate objection to the suggested book list and/or student led material discussed during a session will be acknowledgement that the parent/legal guardian chooses and allows their student to participate.
