Dodge Alumni Engagement
Dean Stephen Galloway has highlighted a number of new initiatives for real change in diversity that can extend beyond the university (please see his letter below). Dean Galloway will focus on creating greater diversity within our faculty, industry partnerships, scholarships, and mentorship programs. We want to know what we can do better, and if you're interested in getting involved. We want to engage with our alumni and know your experience so we can make Dodge the most diverse and welcoming film school it can be.

We know we need to do better to help our alumni succeed in this industry and we don't want the burden of improving Dodge to be on your shoulders, but we do need to learn from the past in order to serve you better in the future. This survey is only the beginning and, with your input, we can grow and change effectively.

Letter from Dean Galloway
I’m writing to express my revulsion at some of the things I’ve seen on television, which have appalled me just as much as you.

As you may know, I’ve spent years working on mentorship programs and raising scholarships for young men and women of color. The slow rate of progress is heartbreaking.

Talk is easy, action is hard. Because of this, I’ve been reluctant to speak prematurely about the steps Dodge is taking. But now is a good time.

Over the past few weeks, many of the faculty and staff have been exploring how we can enhance diversity and inclusivity. I can’t tell you the level of passion I’ve seen, the massive effort that all of our colleagues have embraced.

Here are some of the things you’ll see in the next few months:

-We’ll soon announce the hiring of more than 15 new professors of color. This follows exceptional work by a task force specifically charged with bringing in diverse talent. It’s a giant step that I believe will have a huge impact on our community and culture.

-We’re in talks to make Dodge a full partner in the Young Executives Fellowship, a joint venture with Oprah Winfrey, The Hollywood Reporter and Big Brothers Big Sisters. The program aims to create a pathway to university and leadership positions for young men and women of color.

-Several weeks ago, I instructed faculty and staff that the finalists for any open position must now include people of color, along with women and members of the LGBTQ community.

-We’ve reached out to studios, businesses and donors to develop a scholarship fund that will allow students from diverse backgrounds to join us at Dodge.

-We’ll be collaborating with high schools in Orange County and Los Angeles to bring more students of color to Dodge. Our goal is to create a new mentorship program that connects our students with theirs — and I’ll be asking all of you for your support.

One of the things that made me most excited about coming to Dodge was the chance to help bring real diversity to this incredible school.

Now I want your help. I’d like to know what else you think we should be doing and how we in turn can help you.

As always, I’m happy to meet with you in small groups so that we can have a proper discussion.

Stay well.

Stephen Galloway
