British Antarctic Survey - Ice core lab (BAS)
*** This tour has now reached capacity of 20 people - if you would like to be added to the waiting list anyway, please submit your information below and we will get back to you in case any spaces open up! ***
Ice cores from Antarctica and Greenland are drilled, processed and analysed by BAS scientists and engineers. Laboratory facilities in Cambridge allow the analysis and interpretation of ice cores dating from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years old. Ice is stored, processed and analysed, using a number of analytical chemistry techniques (e.g. ICP-mass spectrometry and Fast-ion chromatography) to provide information from the past to help to predict the future. As part of the tour, you will see a video of an ice core being drilled, learn about the chemical analysis before heading (briefly!) into the cold room (at -20 deg C) to see some ice cores.
