NHS Application 2020
Current juniors & seniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (weighted or unweighted) & 20 hours of community service are eligible to apply to the Blue Valley Southwest National Honor Society chapter.  Please note that the Faculty Council is empathetic to students living during a pandemic. We will work to support students during this time.

1. Apply to this application no later than September 30, 2020

2. Mrs. Hess sends a character recommendation sheet out to current BVSW teachers for someone to nominate you.

3. Mrs. Hess works with our registrar to verify the GPA of any student who has applied.
(Your spring 2020 grades have not yet uploaded into Synergy so the list I have is currently inaccurate. This is why the application is posted through our BVSW Newsletter-we don't want to exclude anyone from applying whose Spring 2020 grades aren't calculated yet)

4. Eligible students (GPA, Service Hours, &. Character recommendation) will be reviewed by our NHS Faculty Council on DATE TBD.

5. DATE TBD applicants will be notified & information about our next meeting, Induction Ceremony, chapter dues, and service groups will be shared. I'm waiting to hear what our October mode of learning is before announcing these dates & delivery (zoom vs. in-person).

LEADERSHIP: List all elected or appointed leadership positions you have held in school, community or work activities. Only those positions in which you were responsible for directing or motivating others should be included. Examples: elected officer for the student body, class, or club; committee chairperson; team captain; newspaper editor; section leader; etc.  PLEASE LIST GRADE LEVEL(S) YOU HELD THE POSITION, NAME OF POSITION, NAME OF ACTIVITY, SPONSOR TO VERIFY
SERVICE: List service activities in which you have participated. This can be individual or group service projects done either in or out of school. Generally speaking, service activities are those that are done for or on behalf of others (not immediate family members) for which no compensation has been given. New members are usually required to record 30 hours of service for membership. Due to COVID-19 and Governor Kelly's Stay at Home order all BV NHS chapters have reduced the requirement for joining to 20 hours. Service hours reported should fall between August 1, 2019- September 1, 2020 (13 months). Please list your service activity, Organization the service was done for,  date(s) served,  time volunteered, & a contact name, phone/email to verify that these hours were performed. The NHS Faculty Council will verify service hours. *
Since 1921, the National Honor Society (NHS) has been working with advisers and principals to recognize students who demonstrate and are committed to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character in school settings. Describe how you exhibit a few of these pillars in school or our community. *
Due to COVID-19 our chapter will be lead differently than ever before, what ideas or suggestions do you have for our officers on how they can connect with members, types of service opportunities to offer, recognize students, or work to support our local BVSW school & feeder elementary & middle school? *
I understand that I am responsible for continuing my community service hours if I am selected as a member. If I fail to complete the required hours I will work with the officers to complete them in a timely manner. If I fail to do so, I will be considered  a member not in good standing & cannot wear the white NHS Stole at graduation services. *
If you have a unique situation & were unable to acquire 20 community service hours between August 1, 2019-September 1, 2020 please share that situation below for the NHS Faculty Council to review. If they have any additional questions, we will be in contact with you.
