Dissertation Writing Retreat Application, July 2022
Thank you for your interest in the Office of Professional Development's July 2022 Dissertation Writing Retreat. This application must be submitted no later than 11:59 PM on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022. (You will hear from us on May 6th, 2022.)

The July Dissertation Writing Retreat will take place Monday, July 25th through Friday, July 29th (9am-4pm). On Monday morning, the retreat will begin with an intensive three-hour boot camp that shares best practices for dissertation writing. The rest of the week will be structured time to work and to reflect on and experiment with best practices. The Dissertation Writing Retreat mainly supports dissertators in their writing process. Our workshops do not focus on specific genres or research practices, but on things like drafting, time and task management, and building a writing community.

The Dissertation Writing Retreats are open to graduate students from departments in all divisions who are at the dissertation-writing stage. Acceptance into the program is competitive, and participants will be selected based on the strength of their completed application. We prioritize applicants who are looking to develop effective writing strategies alongside fellow dissertators and who are actively writing dissertation chapters. MFAs, those at the prospectus/proposal stage, and returning retreat participants will be considered if space is available.

Please thoughtfully respond to the open-ended questions with an answer that is approximately 3-6 sentences (or about 200 to 300 words). You may find it helpful to draft responses to each of the below open-ended prompts in Word (for easy copy-paste) prior to filling out this application.

Open-ended prompts:
1. Please provide a brief description of your dissertation project.
2. Where are you in the dissertation-writing process? What do you hope to be working on during the retreat?
3. What are your strengths and challenges as a writer?
4. The retreat focuses on helping you build a community of other dissertation writers and implement (research-based) habits for more productive writing sessions. How might these goals match your goals as a writer or how might they help you?
5. (Optional) Are there any other aspects of your academic background or dissertation-writing process that you would like us to consider?

This application should take about 20 minutes.
