There are several types of evaluations which are tailored based on specific questions and goals. Evaluations, also known as assessments, may be narrow in scope (e.g., IQ testing) or comprehensive, assessing an individual’s multiple levels of functioning (e.g., intellectual, academic, learning processes, neurocognitive processing, social, emotional, behavioral).

The types of assessments include, but are not limited to:

Intellectual – Also known as IQ testing, intellectual assessment measures an individual’s overall cognitive potential, as well as levels of functioning in the areas of verbal problem-solving, non-verbal (visual-spatial/fluid) problem-solving, working memory, and processing speed. IQ tests include the Wechsler Primary Preschool Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV); Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children- Fifth Edition (WISC-V); and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Test – Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV).

Achievement/Neuroeducational – Achievement testing assesses the level of knowledge an individual has in the areas of math, reading, spelling, and writing. When assessing for a possible learning issue and/or level of current knowledge, academic testing is done in conjunction with IQ testing to determine whether an individual’s cognitive potential matches their level of output (achievement). Achievement tests typically include the Woodcock-Johnson Test of Achievement – Fourth Edition and Wechsler Individual Achievement Test –Fourth Edition (WIAT-IV). We also use additional reading, writing, math, and related processing tests when assessing for reading, writing, and/or math issues (e.g., Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia). Also within our Neuroeducational scope, we assess for ADHD, executive functioning, and other processing differences.

Neuropsychological – Neuropsychological testing measures social-emotional, behavioral, and neurocognitive processing. Several aspects of processing include, but are not limited to attention, executive-functioning (i.e., organization and planning), memory, auditory processing, visual processing, processing efficiency, and visual-motor integration. An individual’s emotional, social, and behavioral functioning is assessed using tests and measures specific to the scope and questions pertaining to these areas. In addition to clinical interviews, tests can include personality, social and emotional processing tests, projectives, and a variety of parent, teacher, and self-report measures. Personality type, learning styles, overexcitability, and creativity are also considered.
