Exclusions refer to a situation in which a child with special
needs is unable to be accommodated at school and is therefore sent home, has
their school hours reduced, or is told not to attend school at all. The number
of exclusions in Ontario is not properly tracked. Exclusions and soft
suspensions are used in place of adequate accommodations for children with
disabilities and there is little oversight as to how much exclusions are used
in schools by school boards and the Ministry of Education. As these exclusions
and soft suspensions are not tracked by the Ministry of Education, we are
looking to gather the experiences from families across Ontario through a survey
that will crowd-source data on exclusions to share with the government and with
media.
This survey is meant to be filled out each day that your child experiences an exclusion from school in Ontario whether that exclusion happens every week or whether this is a unique occurrence. The survey will be open for the remainder of the school year.
This information is being collected by the office MPP
Chandra Pasma in order to demonstrate to the government that information on
exclusions needs to be properly tracked in order to identify areas of
improvement in our education system. If you require any additional information,
please email our office at cpasma-qp@ndp.on.ca.
Names and personal information will not be shared with
the government and any additional information will only be shared in the
Legislature with consent.
