Please join us for the Penn Global Surgery 2022 Fall Symposium where we will hear lectures from our keynote speaker, Dr. Tamara Fitzgerald, along with ancillary presentations from Drs. Georges Azzie, Alemayehu Ginbo Bedada, and Corrado Cancedda. This symposium will focus on capacity building and sustainability. Each talk will be followed by a Q&A session, and there will be an informal reception with lunch and a poster walk session afterwards.
Dr. Fitzgerald works to increase surgical care access for children in low- and middle-income countries. She focuses on capacity building by working with local surgeons to increase numbers of surgical providers, improve quality, and increase surgical support services such as intensive care and anesthesia services.
Dr. Azzie is interested in international surgery, having worked extensively in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. His current focus is on establishing contextualized training programs for surgeons in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Alemayehu is the Assistant Program Director for the Department of Surgery at the University of Botswanna. He has worked extensively with Dr. Azzie and is one of the major local stakeholders of the Botswanna-UPenn partnership.
Dr. Cancedda has an extensive background in global health, leading teams throughout sub-Saharan Africa. He has served as one of the chief architects of the Human Resources for Health Program in Rwanda, the Executive Director of the PIH Ebola Response in Sierra Leone, and most recently as the principle investigator of the Resilient and Responsive Health System Initiative in Liberia.
