Tail Wags For Wellness
Dear fellow school psychologists: There is an increasing interest in partnering with facility/therapy dogs in wellness and special education programs. In your work, you may have come across a trained dog and a handler, such as a counselor, teacher, or school psychologist. Working with a therapy dog typically involves district approval, dog and handler training, and policies and procedures. As this is a developing specialty, this survey gathers information on programs you may have encountered and your thoughts on facility dogs in schools. Thanks in advance for your responses to these questions. Anyone receiving this is eligible to respond.

In your school(s)/district, is there or has there been a program that incorporates a therapy dog for student wellness, literacy, engagement, mental health, or crisis intervention? *
Does your district or SELPA have a policy that you know of that provides guidelines for animals on campus?
*
In your opinion or experience, would a trained facility/therapy dog be an asset to student wellness or a special education program?
*
Are there any concerns or objections you believe would need to be addressed in your district or SELPA prior to implementing a therapy dog program to support students?
*
If your district or SELPA has a program with a therapy dog, would you be willing to share the contact information of the teacher/school psychologist/counselor so that I can reach out to him/her/them, or alternatively, forward my information so that they can contact me?
