Directed students - time for change?
Principals across Canterbury schools have raised concern about the system and processes for supporting and resourcing excluded students into new schools by means of 'direction'. Since this matter was raised in 2021, progress on this has been stalled through Covid implications. This is a matter the advocacy team on the Executive would like to explore further.

To help inform the conversation, we would like principal voice on this matter. The purpose for this survey is to invite those principals who have been involved in the directed student process recently (now to 5 years ago), to contribute to a future-focused and innovative re-design of the systems and processes that support these students and the schools involved with them. It is not expected that the survey will fully unpack all aspects of the student exclusion/direction debate but rather be used as a marker for follow up.
From the data and information collected through this survey, it is the intention to approach Te Mahau for a sector-driven response and initiative that supports change to enable better outcomes for everyone involved in the process.
It goes without saying, that the information and comments supplied within the confines of this survey remain confidential and will not be attributed to any specific source without permission.
