When: Friday, May 10, 2024, from 10am-12pm (CST)

Where: Be Inspired Counseling & Consulting, 304 University Parkway, Natchitoches, LA 71457

Presenter: Lisa Jackson, LPC

Description: This continuing education training provides mental health professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical considerations involved in suicide assessment. Suicide assessment is a critical aspect of mental health practice, requiring careful attention to ethical principles to ensure the well-being of clients while upholding professional standards. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical scenarios, participants will explore the ethical dilemmas inherent in suicide assessment and develop strategies for navigating these challenges ethically and effectively.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand Ethical Guidelines: Participants will familiarize themselves with the ethical guidelines and standards of practice related to suicide assessment, including those outlined by professional organizations such as the Amercian Counseling Association (ACA) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). By the end of the training, participants will be able to articulate key ethical principles relevant to suicide assessment.
  2. Recognize Cultural Considerations: Participants will explore the cultural factors that influence attitudes towards suicide and help-seeking behaviors. Through case studies and discussions, participants will learn to recognize how cultural diversity impacts suicide risk assessment and develop culturally sensitive approaches to assessment and intervention.
  3. Navigate Confidentiality and Duty to Warn: Participants will examine the ethical tensions between maintaining client confidentiality and fulfilling the duty to warn in cases of suicidal ideation or intent. Through hypothetical scenarios and role-playing exercises, participants will practice making ethically informed decisions regarding confidentiality and duty to warn, considering the potential risks and benefits for clients and others involved.
  4. Develop Competency in Suicide Risk Assessment: Participants will enhance their competency in suicide risk assessment by learning evidence-based assessment tools and techniques. They will practice conducting thorough suicide risk assessments, including evaluating risk factors, protective factors, and imminent risk indicators. Participants will also explore strategies for collaborating with clients to develop safety plans and connect them with appropriate resources.
This training is designed to equip mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct ethical and effective suicide assessments, ultimately enhancing their ability to support clients in crisis and prevent suicide.
