DEADLINE HAS PASSED
The Southern California Journalism Education Association is looking for graduating seniors to honor for their accomplishments on their high school journalism staffs with the following scholarships. For the scholarships, a high school senior must have served at least one year on a media (newspaper, yearbook, news magazine, broadcast, etc.) staff by June 2021 and complete the application requirements. Your school must also be a member of SCJEA.
Ted Tajima Scholarship Award $1,000
For graduating seniors only
Ted Tajima was the adviser at Alhambra High School for 35 years, a founder of SCJEA, and an adviser to many current professional journalists. In addition, he served as national vice-president of JEA and president of SCJEA. The Moor, then a weekly newspaper, was a perennial NSPA All-American. He was a mentor to many advisers.
Carol Hallenbeck Scholarship Award $500
For graduating seniors only
Carol Hallenbeck advised the Accolade at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton for 20 years. The newspaper won awards at many levels. She was a frequent speaker at state and national conventions and a co-editor of Practical Ideas for Teaching Journalism, a book with lessons for journalism and yearbook advisers. She was a leader in Orange County JEA and SCJEA.
Betty Rogers Scholarship Award, one at $250
For graduating seniors only
Betty Rogers was the adviser to the Lancer Scroll at Bell Gardens High School. For many years, she was the link to Southern California newspaper and yearbook advisers because she served as treasurer for the organization, handling dues, tracking registration and being a faithful supporter of scholastic journalism.
NEW this year: We are awarding a second scholarship for $250.

The name of the scholarship will be announced shortly.
Entries should be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2021. Finalists will be notified by email and scheduled for a 10-15 minute interview on March 6 on Zoom. Interview times will be assigned between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
