Commemoration and solidarity
On January 13, 1991, Soviet Union used force to overthrow Lithuania's legitimate government, which declared the country's independence on March 11, 1990. The Soviet army attacked Vilnius TV tower, Lithuanian Radio and Television and other strategic infrastructure. During the assault, 14 people were killed and hundreds were injured. These ordinary citizens - the Defenders of Freedom - became a symbol of Lithuania’s victory in the fight for freedom.

Since then, every year on the weekend around January 13 the Tribute run "Road of Life and Death" is organized in Lithuania. From Antakalnis cemetery, where those who lost their lives are laid to rest, to the TV tower. Several years ago such events also started abroad. It will be the 4th time we organize this event in Ottawa.

On 24 February 2022, russia launched a military attack on Ukraine. Until today russian army continues conducting attacks on the civilian population and infrastructure. Civilians are dying each day due to russia’s unprovoked and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainians have already demonstrated their courage and strength in defending their homeland, Europe, and our common civilizational values. This is not just an invasion of Ukraine by russia, but a start of a war against the entire Europe. This year the Tribute Run is also dedicated to show our solidarity with Ukraine and brave Ukrainian people.
