Sign-up for Byte-sized RSE Session 7: Intermediate/Advanced Git
If you would like to attend the 7th Byte-sized RSE session on Intermediate/Advanced Git Version Control, please register here. The event will be hosted online via Zoom on Wednesday 10th May 2023, 13:00-14:30 BST/UTC+1. The Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants shortly before the session.

This session will look at more advanced uses of Git version control. If you're comfortable with the core features of using git - adding and committing files, interacting with remote repositories (cloning/pulling/pushing), dealing with basic conflicts, and you'd like to learn more, this session is for you!

We'll look at Git's Feature Branch Workflow as an effective way of collaborating and making contributions to code. We'll also look at rebasing, dealing with larger/more complicated pull requests with conflicts and cherry-picking. We'll also aim to look at some other more advanced features of Git and GitHub if time allows.

Session prerequisites:
To be able to fully participate in the interactive part of this session, you'll need the following prerequisites installed on your system:
  • Python version 3.8 or above. Type 'python -v' at your shell prompt and press enter to see what version of Python is installed on your system. If you don't have Python installed on your system and require assistance with the installation, you can take a look at the instructions provided by The Carpentries for installing Python in preparation for undertaking their Python training module.
  • A bash shell with Git version control tool installed
- On macOS and Linux, a bash shell will be available by default.
- On Linux you may need to use your system package manager to install git.
- On Windows you can install Git for Windows to provide both Git and a bash shell.

- Type 'git' and press enter at your shell prompt to check if git is installed. It should display 'usage: git …' followed by a set of help instructions.
