Hmong Music and Culture - Thurs, Jan 6, 2022 (7:00 - 8:00 pm)
This event is intended for music educators of students in grades K-12.

EVENT LOCATION:  ONLINE - A Zoom link will be provided prior to the workshop

DESCRIPTION:
Our presenters want people to understand more about what IS Hmong culture, who the Hmong people are, and how to incorporate Hmong language into the classroom. This session has three parts:
1. Hmong Culture and History Introduction - Seng Lor
2. Intro to "There Will Be a Light/Yuav Tsum Muaj Hnub Zoo" - Douachi Yang will explain the concept, show a video and teach the bilingual chorus
3. How to use Hmong music in the classroom when you are not Hmong - Natalia Romero Arbeláez will share ways she's incorporated Hmong music in her choir classroom and Douachi and Seng will provide insight.

Participants will learn and receive an original bilingual composition written by Douachi Yang published through a CC license, which means anyone can perform it.

OUR PRESENTERS:
Seng Lor is a Hmong performer, music educator and aspiring conductor. He is studying Music Education at St. Olaf College.

Douachi Yang is a Hmong songwriter and performer and can be found actively performing in the Twin Cities. She is studying Music Business at St. Catherine's University.

Natalia Romero Arbeláez is an educator, conductor and performer who works at Harding High School, where she teaches Choir, Piano and World Music.

There is no cost for this workshop, and 1 CEU hour is earned. The event is hosted by Dr. Wendy Barden, Music Education Specialist in Professional Development & Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education.
