Violin Video- The violin is the highest member of the string family, often plays the melody, and its repertoire contains more virtuosic music. The violin's sound can range from the brilliant high notes, down to the G below the treble staff.
Viola Video- A viola sounds lower than a violin, but is held/played in the same way. Many violists choose the instrument because of the lush and deep sound when compared to violin.
Cello Video: The Cello is the "tenor" of the string section. Sometimes playing a lead line, and sometimes serving as the accompaniment, the cello has some medium-high notes, but also plays very low.
Double Bass Video (offered in SIXTH GRADE): The Double Bass (or String Bass) is the "bass" (obviously) of the orchestra. Usually playing the bass line, this instrument rarely gets the melody line in orchestra, but the part is integral to the music! This is the lowest pitched string instrument.

Most students begin in 5th grade orchestra as beginners with NO prior experience on their instrument. It is helpful to know if any students have prior experience on their instrument.

My child and I have discussed the orchestra expectations, including the class schedule, attendance, and practice expectations that were described in the information letters provided. We believe that my child will be able to meet the expectations to participate successfully in the orchestra class and ensure a successful, fun year for all students involved. If my child has a special need that might affect their orchestra participation in any way, I will contact Mr. Napier as soon as possible to develop a plan and resources to assist my child in orchestra.
