Tree Resiliency for Environmental Engagement and Stewardship (TREES), is a community outreach program designed to involve the community with the city's goal of increasing the tree canopy and the number of trees in the city. Increasing the number of trees in the city has multiple benefits that create resiliency and protects the lagoon ecosystem.
1. TREES reduces the urban heat island effect, through shading.
2. TREES provides increased water retention and combat flooding, reducing stormwater runoff into the lagoon.
3. TREES mitigates against sea level rise and climate associated impacts.
4. TREES creates disaster preparedness from flooding by absorbing water during periods of heavy rains.
5. TREES improves the effectiveness of the existing green infrastructure that provides nutrient reduction.
6. TREES increases tree canopy that will adsorb the greenhouse gasses such as carbon.
7. TREES enhances the quality of life of all residents in our community and creates food and homes for displaced wildlife.
TREES is part of the 2021 Earth Day Celebration where the City of Satellite Beach has partnered with multiple Brevard County cities to plant 1,000 trees as part of an “Urban Tree Planting Collaborative”. The cities of Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Melbourne, and Satellite Beach are working together to reduce the heat island affect, create shade, and increase storm water retention together with the Florida Forest Service we are happy to bring you the Urban Tree Planting Collaborative.
