Welcome to the VIF 2021 General Registration  Form

Everyone participating in VIF 2021 must fill out this form. You must complete this form in one sitting so give yourself a period of at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted time.

Regardless of whether you come to us as a Vintage troupe who played together before the Pandemic, your Teams are virtual or you are by yourself bravely entering this wild-wild west of virtual  improv festival as a lone traveler, welcome!

Truth be told, most of our performers arrive solo. So if you are not part of a team, you are part of the majority! And you are now part of our 2021 team!

Every person who performs at the festival completes this form so we know you are interested in performing. Unlike our on-site festival where space is limited and invitations are offered on a competitive basis, at the virtual festival we have room for everyone! This means all levels from beginner through advanced performance level improvisers get placed on level appropriately curated teams that work together intensively over the festival to prepare a performance under the direction of our hand-picked Festival Faculty.

Your Individual registration helps the VIF Staff determine which troupe performance level is appropriate for you so we can make sure you  have the most fun possible!  The Festival spans 5 days and nights this year. That means if you are a virtual improv die hard, you will have time during the Festival to participate in up to 5 curated teams. This year because this is a virtual festival,  you just need to take a minimum of 1 to be considered a participant in the Festival. As a participant, you are welcome to submit to perform in other capacities than curated teams. So your IRL troupe, your virtual troupes, your reunion troupes from last years Fest etc.  are all welcome to submit for free this year.

This is an important thing that distinguishes VIF 2021 from other Festivals whether they be IRL or Virtual: the curated team. The curated team is the basic building block of the Festival. A  curated team is formed of festival participants creating an ensemble during the Festival by learning, practicing and then performing together. Sometimes people wonder why we place such huge emphasis on being involved in one. Well, it assures we meet our nonprofit’s mission which is to foster community through learning, playing and performing together at the Festival and beyond!

We appreciate your understanding, enthusiasm and support. VIF is waiving the $25 registration fee for this year. Please register early for the lowest rates. Each month the price per hour will increase slightly.

VIF 2021 Dates
REGISTRATION FOR EVERY INDIVIDUAL  IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN VIF2021
Everyone planning on taking classes, or performing in any capacity must register. All members of preexisting teams working together at times outside the Festival must register here as individuals.

If you are on an ongoing VIF affiliated  troupe or your VIF class wish to perform at VIF 2021, each member performing with you must also register here to participate on a curated team. As an example, if you have a 10 person group that performs together independently, and only 7 members register to participate on a curated team, only those 7 members would be allowed to perform with your troupe at the Festival.
MUST I BE A VIF MEMBER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FESTIVAL?
Anyone can participate in VIF2021. It just costs a whole lot less and there are a whole lot more benefits if you do join.

You do not have to join VIF this year to participate, but we highly advise it because the nonmember rate per intensive will be more than the VIF2021 membership. If you are not a member and wish to take advantage of all member benefits during, before and after the Festival, please sign up. You pay $25 for the Calendar year and there are tons of benefits and cost savings. Pick the month that includes today's date as your one-time sign up interval for the rest of 2021.

VIF IS 100% VIRTUAL IN 2021
ALL PARTICIPANTS AND PERFORMERS IN VIF 2021  MUST TAKE PART IN AT LEAST ONE CURATED INTENSIVE ENSEMBLE AND PERFORMANCE
The curated experience is typically an intensive of at least 6 hours working with other members of our VIF  community in an ensemble created specifically during the Festival.  That means if you are registering as part of a pre-existing  troupe, you will perform  at least twice during the Festival-once with your regular troupe and once with your curated ensemble.

This is sometimes confusing to people so we want to be very clear right away. We encourage you to contact us with any questions. Regardless of how old (or young) the members of your troupe may be, we will- in fact by our non-profit's mission we must- include everyone in a curated experience. We work very hard to make sure  this can happen. HOW THE FESTIVAL MAKES CURATED TROUPE ASSIGNMENTS
The Festival determines your level of experience to place you on curated teams that work together in intensives. We work hard to assure the intensive(s)/ensembles  that you are assigned to are appropriate and fun. The more accurate information you provide here, the more accurate our placements will be.

We send out more information about your festival intensive assignments once we have the entire schedule figured out. The day and time of your assignments determine the timing of your curated team’s performance. Unless you opt for the Premium-Choice, we happily and completely curate your experience  based on the information we can gather in advance.

BEGINNER THROUGH INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
If you have self identified as a beginner through intermediate level we require nothing else. We will automatically place you in your requested level


ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE
If you are new to VIF and if you wish to try out for performing at the advanced intermediate level we require proof of completion of a comedy school program, a performance link with you identified doing something that clearly represents your work. It may be a showcase. Admission to Advanced Performance Level requires an invitation to submit. If you are a VIF veteran, reach out to us to confirm this is the correct placement for you. Without this step you will automatically be assigned to Intermediate level. This level would formerly have been categorized as advanced.


ADVANCED PERFORMANCE LEVEL now known as THE VIF ACADEMY FOR ADVANCED PERFORMANCE is by  Invitation only  after an application process.
 
PREMIUM-CHOICE SUPPLEMENT
If you are the kind of person who desires some direct control over your intensive options, or like to know your schedule as soon as possible, this new program is our attempt to balance cost versus certainty. For most people, our usual assignment process is works perfectly so you do not need to feel obligated to purchase these supplements. More on this option at this end of the registration.
EACH TROUPE MEMBER OF ANY TEAM SUBMITTING TO PERFORM AS AN ENSEMBLE AT THE VIF 2021 IS  REQUIRED TO REGISTER AND PARTICIPATE AS AN INDIVIDUAL IN ORDER TO MEET THE CRITERIA TO PERFORM WITH THEIR PRE-EXISTING TROUPE AT THE FESTIVAL
Forgive us if this seems repetitive. We always get this question multiple times, so here goes again: Regardless of age, any member of your troupe who will perform at VIF 2021 must register for at least 1 intensive and perform in that intensive's show with the curated ensemble. This is in addition to your troupe' performance.  We work to provide as many alternatives to meet this requirement of our non-profit. These are designed to foster connections in the VIF community and further the mission of VIF. VIF welcomes participants, regardless of age, who respect, value and wish to work productively with older improvisers.

Only those team members who are registered here and fully participate in at least one curated team/performance at the festival will be permitted to perform with your troupe during the festival. So this means, individual participation first, is a gateway to troupe performance at the Festival. No exceptions. But we work extremely hard to accommodate this requirement. If your troupe wishes to perform at VIF2021, we are committed to facilitating participation. In some cases we may arrange an intergenerational experience for younger troupe members.

The 2021 VIF begins on Wednesday Sept 8 and runs through Sunday evening September 12. The bulk of the shows and intensive series occur over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, however we are adding more options for our community by adding Wednesday and Thursday. We would appreciate it if you would mark all of your availability and we will block out the schedule, ideally in the next 4 weeks so you know your specific time commitments and can free up the rest of your calendar during that timeframe.
LENGTH OF INTENSIVE Our usual intensives are 6 hours plus a show and feedback, which will be a 7 or 8 hour block of your time per each intensive. It may be possible to arrange 8 or ten hour intensives that run in varied schedules across the festival. Hours refer to teaching time, not performance and feedback. Because the formation of each curated team is a complex process, the Festival does  not offer the choice of specific instructors or intensive selection unless you choose to purchase the Premium-Choice supplemental ticket. What qualifies as a Vintage Troupe?
Vintage Troupes include pre-existing teams, virtual teams, teams that are currently working through VIF with coaches and directors, previous curated teams that want to work together for the festival, former classes at VIF that have continued or wish to continue performing together, troupes that have performed at The Follies, duos, trios, musical...In vintage troupes we will probably be at least 50% of the members over age 50 but we are open to considering troupes who wish to participate in our Festival with as few as 1 person providing all members participate on the curated teams as well.
Each person in a  Vintage troupe must complete this entire form. Only one person -probably your troupe producer or coach- will complete a separate submission for your troupe.

SECTION 6: DUO ROULETTE
The Duo Roulette : A Fun Performance Event at VIF 2021
The Duo Roulette is a Duo event that will take place throughout the Festival. Members of existing Duos and members of wanna be duos will be assigned randomly each day of the festival to perform together in a special Duo shows. You might be paired with a beginner, or a pro. Chances are it will not be someone you can predict.

It's $10 for Festival participants, a lot more for others. You will perform at least 3 times in a friendly competition with Lady Luck. You can sign up here :

If you personally refer a new Vintage or near Vintage Improvisers who end up registering and performing for VIF 2021, we will give them a 10% discount on their first 6 hour intensive and give you up to a $25  discount on your second intensive or a class of your choice over the next 12 months. This  offer does not apply to members of new Vintage Teams who will be performing at VIF 2021.

Diversity Initiative and Incentive
VIF wishes to involve Vintage or near Vintage aged improvisers in the 2021 Festival. In an effort to welcome those who have not previously been participated in VIF events, we have developed some incentives.  This includes but is not limited to BIPOC, improvisers from outside Canada, the US and Western Europe. Specifically we would love to welcome all Vintage Improvisers from South and Central America, The Pacific Islands, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

If you as a VIF member are responsible for getting a person listed in the target areas above enrolled in a a VIF intensive, you will receive a credit toward 25% off a second intensive during the festival. Even more importantly, Vintage improvisers from the targeted area will receive one free intensive if they have financial need. If they have the ability to pay it is a BOGO free intensive when signing up for 2.

Scholarships vs work/study
We have some scholarship funding available so please ask. But what we really need is help with the many tasks associate with making this festival and all the educational activities run. Payment: The cost per hour of instruction is $ 21 making a 6 hour intensive plus show direction and feedback cost $126. This is slightly more than last year because we are giving our Faculty a raise. We ask that you pay for  at least one 6 hour intensive now and if you end up getting a longer one we will ask you to pay that difference later. PLEASE CONFIRM YOU UNDERSTAND : Curated teams meet between 5-10 hours during the festival. Typical length of these intensives is 6 hours plus 1 performance hour. With a 5 day festival we will have more options. Costs intensives is based on the length of time with faculty members and their technical needs. We estimate the cost is $21 per contact hour for an intensive with one faculty member. In some cases a supplement may be required , for example if there are 2 faculty members teaching. You have the choice to opt out of any longer intensives. Intensives run all 5 days this year in 2-3 hour sessions of varying configuration. It is possible one or two  intensives could be set to run on only on Wednesday and Thursday evenings  or Saturday and Sunday days to accommodate those who can't to take weekdays off . Completing the availability with as much accuracy as possible is very helpful. Although the performance schedule is still in development, Invited Troupes, Faculty Troupes and Innovation Ensembles may be assigned to  perform any night of the Festival but likely will have a performance on Friday and Saturday nights. The curated team performances  and Award Ceremony will most likely occur on Sunday night although there will be some exceptions *

The cost for intensives is $21 per hour for a courses with 1 instructor. Please pay for at least one 6 hour intensive at this time and we will provide the additional billing as scheduling into intensives begins, You will check out and pay for the 7 hour intensives unless you have been invited to join Vintage Vinyl 2021.

The regular intensive assignment for VIF is made through a process overseen and determined by the Festival. We are proud of that process because it facilitates  achieving the mission of our non-profit. It is something that differentiates our Festival from most others. Since each person who performs in our Festival participates in a curated ensemble the process provides the most cost-effective way for each of us to participate by assuring that all curated teams are filled. The regular assignments are based on individual interests and experience as well as the times they have available to participate. Each year, we receive numerous requests to choose certain intensives or instructors,

VIF has not had a mechanism to honor those requests. But this year we have the ability to pilot this Premium-Choice option.

We will offer a limited number of Premium-Choice Supplement Tickets.

A Premium-Choice ticket is a $50 add-on to a regular festival intensive list-price. Each Premium-Choice Ticket purchased is assigned a number based on the order of purchase.

?? How does Premium-Choice Work?

Once the festival schedule is released, holders of Premium-Choice Tickets will be offered choices of  all the intensives they meet the pre-requisites for based on the order they purchase the Premium-Choice Tickets. The tickets are not a guarantee that you will get the exact  spot in the intensive you wish, especially if your purchase order is amongst the later purchases.

??  What happens when I get my notification of intensives to choose from as a Premium-Choice Holder?

We will divide the group of Premium-Choice Holders into 3 tiers, according to when you signed up (so earlier is better!). Over a 1 week period before we make intensive assignments, each Tier of Choice holders will have 24 hours to choose and purchase the intensives of their choice before we move on to the next purchase tier. Once the initial 24 hour period for your tier ends, you may still use your Premium-Choice, you just may not have as many choices as you had during the first 24 hours.

??  How many Premium Choice Tickets should I purchase?

It depends on the number of intensives you want to take. You may purchase up to 4 for yourself only

?? Am I guaranteed a spot in the exact intensive I want?

Sorry. There are never guarantees. BUT...There are two potential advantages to the Premium-Choice Tickets

1) If you sign up early enough you are pretty likely to get your first choice in the number of intensives you purchased Premium-Choice Tickets for.

2) Even if you don't get your first choices you have some measure of control over your ultimate assignments-although we promise, the regular process works really well!

??  What happens if none of my choices are available when my Premium-Choice number/tier comes up?

If there are no choices you desire by the time we get to your Premium-Choice ticket number, we can apply it to the regular Festival intensive purchase price! .

??  Will I still have access to the intensives if I do not purchase the Premium-Choice Supplement?

Yes.

Premium -Choice is a pilot project this year. There are only a limited number of Premium-Choice Tickets per Intensive.
Significant numbers of Regular access tickets are available for every single  intensive. These will be assigned at the Festival's
discretion based on input you provide when registering for the Festival.

?? Can I give my Premium-Choices to someone else?

No. Only the registered email owner on the purchase may use these tickets, so if you are a couple, make sure you each use your own email address to purchase the ticket.
