RDL Inclusive Playground Project - Parent Survey
We have begun planning and fundraising for an inclusive playground expansion at our school to promote healthy living, an active lifestyle and fun for all children.
While Red Deer Lake School currently has a playground structure in place, the school has seen rapid growth in the number of students attending and the structure can no longer safely accommodate all of our students. As a result, staff at the school have had to create a schedule for which grades can use the playground at which recess. This means that children can’t use the playground any time that they wish.
When our current playground was constructed it was not looked at through an inclusive lens. As a result, children in wheelchairs or other mobility issues are not able to utilize the structure and students with sensory disorders, learning differences and autism spectrum disorder don’t always feel comfortable joining the activities that are happening on the playground.
Our hope is that by constructing a new inclusive playground we will be able to have something that is welcoming and safe for all school and community children.
