What is the UNMGCY?

The Major Group for Children and Youth is the mandated formal mechanism for children and young people to meaningfully engage at certain processes in the United Nations. It derives its mandate through several UN resolutions, frameworks, TORs, including the resolutions of UN General Assembly. 

We work across the pillars (peace and security, human rights, development) and organs (general assembly, economic and social council, security council, secretariat, international court of justice) of the UN system. This comprises Policy & Advocacy (policy), Capacity Building (capacity), Youth Action (action), and Knowledge (assessment, generation and use).

We act as a bridge between young people and the UN system in order to ensure that their right to meaningful participation is realised. We do so by engaging formal and informal communities of young people, in the design, implementation, monitoring, follow-up, and review of sustainable development policies at all levels.

Who can Join Using this Form?

Individuals under the age of 30 may join MGCY using this form. You will join a constituency of thousands of members in over 170 countries and territories.

Are there any terms and conditions?

Yes, and they are simple! All members need to:

1. Agree to adhere to the Process and Procedures of the MGCY- https://www.unmgcy.org/mandate-and-governance

2. Agree with the principles of the UN Charter (https://www.un.org/securitycouncil/content/purposes-and-principles-un-chapter-i-un-charter)

3. Agree with the values and principles of the MGCY as expressed in its vision: “collective principles of solidarity, justice, equity, universality, diversity, inclusion, human rights, and the integrity of the planet.”
