The CPWG will be a voluntary, self-governing body focused on providing a forum for enhancing dialogue, fostering public understanding and encouraging discussion about the cleanup of the Navy Grumman groundwater plume, providing feedback on schedules, and making recommendations on outreach and public participation. Updates will be provided about current and upcoming cleanup efforts during CPWG meetings. The CPWG will consist of citizens, community and business leaders, public officials, and other local community stakeholders. 15-20 members for the CPWG will be selected based on areas of interest and qualifications to provide broad representation of community needs and interests.
Applicants for the CPWG will be selected by the Consensus Building Institute in conjunction with the NYSDEC using a selection process based on, but not limited to, the following:
- Diversity including diversity of age, background, experiences, and expertise.
- Engagement and leadership within the community.
- Representation by affected municipalities and water districts.
- Proximity to the surface extent of the groundwater plume (known to exist deep beneath the ground surface) and areas undergoing cleanup activities.
- Residence or place of work in Nassau County, New York.
- Past interest in and involvement with the cleanup.
The application period for the CPWG ended on April 4, 2023 however; applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Application does not guarantee selection.
