7th Grade ELA 2020-2021

This class focuses on increasing and improving reading and writing skills.
Many of our assignments will take days or even weeks to complete.
We will also have short daily assignments.
The following things will help you be successful in this class.

Materials

  • Paper. This will be used every day.

  • A binder or a section of your binder for English only

  • Pencils and a box of colored pencils or a couple of highlighter pens

  • A reading book (This is required every day beginning with day one!)

For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to do their daily independent reading on electronic devices.

Attendance

  • This is a collaborative class. We work together in one way or another almost every single day. Not only will you need to be in class for the direct instruction that will help you with your assignments, you will need to be there to complete the many assignments we do with partners or groups. Due to the cooperative nature of these assignments, they are sometimes impossible to make up if they are missed.

  • If you are absent, it’s your responsibility to gather and complete missed assignments.

  • If you are absent for an extended period of time, email the teacher right away so we can work together to determine which assignments you will need to complete to maintain your grade. Accommodations will be made for students who have extended absences.

Students who consistently use hall passes to leave class miss important information and essential work time. Hall passes will be limited. If your student has a medical issue and needs to leave the classroom, please let me know so we can work together to help your student.

Extra Credit

Book Clubs

Lunch Time Activities with the Librarian

The opportunity for extra credit is also built into the class work.

Extra credit will not be customized for students at the end of the quarter.

Homework

  • Students should be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes daily at least five times a week.

  • At the beginning of the first and second quarters, there will be academic vocabulary lists students should be studying. These will include vocabulary words for the poetry and short story units.

  • Any assignments not finished in class will be expected to be completed as homework.

What happens when work is late? Late work, do-overs, missing assignments and retakes for the first half of the term will be accepted during the first four weeks of the term. Late work for the second half of the term will  be accepted from midterm through the ninth week of the term. The last week of each reporting period is reserved for grading and recording grades.

No Late work will be accepted during that week. Work due prior to midterms will not be accepted after the midterm grade has been posted. Late work may be subject to a reduction in points. Grades can still be improved by completing extra-credit assignments.

The cutoff dates for all grading periods will be posted in the classroom at the beginning of the grading period.

Canvas will be the best place for you and your student to check grades.

Citizenship

To earn a good grade, comply with the classroom behaviors that are outlined in the Sand Ridge Student Handbook. Also, the following guidelines will be used to determine citizenship:

  • Fourth tardy =N--This can be monitored through the portal.

  • Fifth tardy =U--Any additional tardies will result in an administrative referral.

  • Being disrespectful to a substitute, causing classroom disruptions, being removed from the classroom, or inappropriate use of electronic devices will result in a drop in citizenship.

  • Cheating (copying work, plagiarizing, or aiding others in cheating) will result in a U in citizenship and an F on the assignment.

Classroom Rules

1. Be prepared with paper, sharpened pencil, and books.

2. No food, candy, drinks, in the classroom. Water is an exception to this rule.

3. No inappropriate or unauthorized use of electronic devices in class.

4. Do not interrupt the learning environment with inappropriate behaviors.

5. During direct instruction, remain in your seat unless you have permission to get up.

6.Treat everyone with respect. Respect and take care of school property.

7. Do not cheat or aid someone else in cheating.

8. Follow all directions found in the school rules section of the student handbook.

10. To avoid being marked tardy, students should be working on the warm up activity when the tardy bell rings.

Electronic Devices, Headphones, and Toys

  • Phones are to be put away and out of sight during class.

  • Toys are not allowed in the classroom.

  • Headphones and earbuds are not allowed in class.

  • Students are not allowed to read on their electronic devices.

  • You will be assigned a Chromebook for class use. Your Chromebook should be charged and with you everyday. It should be open and in use ONLY when you have been instructed to use your Chromebook in class. Misuse of the Chromebook will result in loss of Chromebook privileges.

A Few Words About Canvas

This is an in-person class. Assignments for this class will not be automatically posted on Canvas. Before your student is asked to produce a piece of work for this class, we will spend time together exploring, understanding, defining, and experimenting with a concept. This learning will be done together as a class, in small groups, or with partners. Students will work through new concepts in small, daily steps with me. There are many of our class activities that cannot be replicated electronically. Approximately 90% of our learning will be done in class with paper, pencil, and support from partners and/or the teacher. I will read poems, short stories, and novels with your students. We will spend days writing together to create drafts of our essays. We will also share ideas with each other in Socratic Seminars (whole class discussions). Grades will be posted through Canvas, and when possible or necessary, work will be sent to your students through Canvas, but this will be the exception and not the norm for this class. Canvas will be used whenever possible to post resources such as vocabulary lists or the guide to Utah Compose.

WEBER SCHOOL DISTRICT VIDEO POLICY

Weber School District has a policy for the viewing of videos in the junior high school. No “PG” rated video can be shown without the permission of the parent/guardian. In this class, only videos that meet core curriculum standards, relate directly to the curriculum, and enhance the teaching of certain subjects/stories will be shown. Videos such as YouTube clips of Poets reciting poetry, Fables, Alfred Hitcock’s Lamb to the Slaughter, or the non-rated, 1975 Richard Chamberlain version of The Count of Monte Cristo may be shown to increase learning. Most teaching will require only the use of short segments or video clips.
