9/9 Fall Undergrad Research Mixer (Grad Student / Faculty Form)
Hello hello! We (the DPAC Undergrad Research Engagement Group) are hosting the first SCS Research Mixer of the year. Join us on Thurs. 9/9 @ 8-9pm for a virtual event, where we will welcome (with your help) some future undergraduate researchers. The main goals of this mixer are to provide students a opportunity to

1. learn about specific CS research opportunities this semester
2. meet and get to know potential longer-term grad student and faculty mentors

If you are interested in becoming a longer-term research mentor to an ugrad for a specific project you are offering, please fill out this form by THURSDAY 9/2. The last two mixers were greatly appreciated by the undergrads, so please sign up, we need you! Let us know (dpac-ugrad-re@andrew.cmu.edu) if you have questions :)

FAQ
----------------

Q: What should I expect at the mixer?
A: You will lead a breakout room with 1-4 undergrads. If you are looking for students to hire, this is a time to interview them and gauge interest.

Q: Do I need to prepare something?
A: Some quick visuals like slides or videos can be helpful! Feel free to prepare something cool to attract interest but it's not required. We will gather and send questions from the undergrads before the event so you'll know what to expect.

Q: Can I sign up if I'm not offering a research project?
A: Of course, undergrads want to hear about your research, and they'll have lots and lots of questions!

Q: If I'm offering a project, does it have to be funded?
A: No! But please state that in the larger text box to describe your research / the project.

Q: What is the structure of the event?
A: Like last time, you will have breakout rooms but this time undergrads can freely move between rooms (like a career fair). So if you find a good mentee match you can talk with them for as long as needed.

Q: How will breakout rooms be assigned?
A: Undergrads will be given a sheet with your research areas on it and put their names next to projects / research areas they are interested in. We'll indicate on the sheet if you aren't offering a project, so that those seriously looking for a project can take that into consideration when deciding rankings. We will send you the sheet before the mixer; if no ugrads have put their names next to yours, you can still come to the mixer to "set up tent" in case last-minute walk-ins are interested. But also, feel free to not come. Note that some undergrads who said they were interested in your research may not end up joining your breakout room; flakers are a fact of life.
Name *
Andrew email address (@andrew.cmu.edu) *
CMU affiliation *
Department (that your lab is in) *
Required
Describe your specific area of research in <= 36 characters. *
Your zoom breakout room will be named this.
Are you offering an undergraduate research position for the fall? *
If you answer "yes" then a note will be added next to your name / research topic that you are potentially looking for a UG student to fill a role for the summer, and UGs looking for roles will know they can expect to talk to you about a potential project and that you may "interview" them during the event. If you answer "no" then UGs will know they can't expect to find an opportunity with you for the summer, but only learn about your exciting research.
If you're considering offering research position, please remember to talk to your advisor. Have you talked to your advisor regarding your project?

Bigger text box to describe your research, or (if you are offering a position) the project you have available and other details like whether it's funded or not
There will be a Google sheet with this info made available to the undergrads, which will help them rank research areas / projects based on their interests. They will subsequently be assigned to breakout rooms with grads based on matching algorithm. If you previously had a project on Tom Cortina's undergrad project list and that project is not yet filled, feel free to copy over the descriptions you made for that here.
(Only if you are offering a position) Is the position on-campus or remote?
Clear selection
(Only if you are offering a position) Prerequisites
If you are offering a project, list prerequisites you want interested undergrads to have (e.g. classes to have taken, concepts to be familiar with, programming languages that they know). Keep in mind that they are just wee undergrads, you were once in their inexperienced shoes. ;)
We are looking for other ways we can encourage ugrads into the research community. What was your ugrad research experience like (if you had one)? What was lacking, what went well? What was the deciding factor that made you decide to pursue graduate studies?
Questions, comments, concerns, passing emotions, heartfelt thoughts?
We will put your name + andrew email on the project sheet to be sent to all ugrads, so they may reach out to you about the project you are offering or your specific research!
Before the event, we will let you know by email whether or not there are undergrads interested in your project. If there are not, feel free to not attend the event. You may still attend the mixer, as there will be walk-ins who might be interested in your project!
