The tundra, mountains and forests prevail in the local landscape, which is characterized by rich flora and fauna as well as numerous small towns. There are more than 3 million lakes and 3 thousand rivers on the territory of Alaska. A third of peninsula is located within the Arctic Circle. In 1784 the expedition under the direction of Grigory Shelekhov founded the first permanent settlement on the island of Kodiak offshore  Alaska, but in 1867 Russian Alaska became the American one.Approximately five thousand earthquakes struck this territory every year. Probably this is the reason why most of the territory of this peninsula is not populated. At the time of the gold rush, this place was very popular among gold diggers. Gold was in a large numbers there as a kilogram of potatoes could be sold per kg of gold. Gold still had a big price, but at that time miners suffered from scurvy, and potatoes was a great medicine. The flag of the state was designed by thirteen-year-old boy Benny. Eight five-pointed stars are presented on the blue background of the flag. They symbolize the constellation of the Ursa Major and The North star. *
