DEI Workshop for Japanese Language Professionals of Ohio

The topic of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) challenges us to re-examine our long-held assumptions and what we take for granted. It is truly a life-long endeavor. Where can we start?

During this workshop, we propose two areas to start the process for Japanese language professionals in Ohio. First, what can we do in our classrooms? How can we create a just and inclusive environment in a classroom? Second, how can we make OATJ a truly inclusive organization? What steps can we take to move our organization toward inclusivity?

During this workshop, Dr. Suwako Watanabe (professor at Portland State University, former AATJ president, the chair of 2020 AATJ DEI task force) will facilitate our discussion.
Based on the definition of some key concepts, the participants will be encouraged to reflect on themselves and start thinking on DEI together through a breakout session. This is the first occasion of our DEI work, and Dr. Hiroaki Kawamura (University of Findlay, 2021 AATJ DEI taskforce member) will continue the dialogue in Ohio.

DEIは非常に大きな課題で、どこから始めれば良いのかわからなくなってしまいます。しかし、前進しなければなりません。まずは身近なところから始めてみてはどうでしょうか。

このワークショップでは、ポートランド州立大学の渡辺先生をディスカッションリーダーとして、DEIの問題をOATJとして話し合ってみたいと思います。

まずはディスカッションのために必要な基本用語の定義に始まり、ブレイクアウトルームを活用しつつ、以下の二つのテーマを扱います。

（１）日本語教育の現場（教室）をインクルーシブな場（誰をも排除しない包摂的な場）にするにはどうすれば良いのか。また、（２）我々のOATJをインクルーシブな組織（誰をも排除しない包摂的な組織）にするには、どうすれば良いのか。

二つとも大きなトピックではありますが、どちらも私たちにとって身近な問題です。皆で考えていきたいと思います。

渡辺先生は、AATJ会長などに加え、AATJのDEIタスクフォースグループに委員長として参加していらっしゃいました。今回のワークショップは、OATJで最初のDEIに関してのディスカッショングループとなります。これ以後は、同じタスクフォースにメンバーとして参加したフィンドレー大学の川村先生を中心に、「オハイオの日本語教育をDEIの視点からどう見直していくのか」を、皆で考えていきたいと思います。
