Monash University has a duty of care to both researchers and participants in any research studies. In line with this, all participants over 12 years and two months of age and all researchers who may come into contact with a participant are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an authorised medical exemption.

This research involves minimal risk. COVID safety measures will be followed during research
activities to ensure the safety of participants and researchers including:
1. Phone/SMS screening for flu-like symptoms 24-48 hours before and immediately before
research activities begin.
2. Cleaning and disinfection of all 3D models that participants will handle before and after
research activities.
3. Physical distancing employed during research activities and the interview between
participant and researchers to maintain 1.5m social distancing.
4. Table surfaces that participants and researchers come into contact with during research
activities will be disinfected before and after.
5. The researchers will wear masks at all times in order to ensure safety. Participants will be
asked to wear masks if indoors, but if outdoors will be given the choice.
6. The participant and researchers will disinfect and/or wash their hands directly before and after research activities.
7. Ensure contact details of all participants are recorded and kept and a log of all individuals
involved in the research is maintained.
At no time should you be asked to perform any task that may cause anxiety or stress. You will also be able to withdraw from the research at any time.

What does the research involve?
Monash University is conducting a study exploring ways cross-floor spatial knowledge can be improved with 3D printed building plans. We’ve designed accessible 3D floor plans and invite blind or low vision participants to explore various presentation methods. You are invited to work with the research team in identifying materials that may be helpful and to provide feedback. You will be asked to explore the building plans, complete navigation tasks and a questionnaire. The whole activity should take no more than 90 minutes. Audio/ or video recording may be used with your consent. Data will be collected in person by investigators on Monash University Caulfield or Clayton campus and/or another more convenient location. Participants will be compensated with a $100 voucher for their time.

Why were you selected for this study?
You were selected for this study as people who are blind or have low vision can potentially benefit from the use of 3D printed maps.

Consent and withdrawal
Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. Even if you agree to take part in the study, you can withdraw your permission at any time and any material collected will be discarded.
You are welcome to explore the 3D printed materials made available without participating in the study.

Possible benefits
Currently, tactile maps are used in Orientation & Mobility (O&M) training for individuals who are blind or have low vision. 3D printed maps have been shown to have advantages over current methods. Participants may benefit from the research through the use of accessible 3D printed maps that offer improvements for end-users.

Potential risks
This research involves minimal risks.

Confidentiality
Your participation in this study will not be made known to others and your details will remain confidential.
Results will be published in aggregated form so that individual participants cannot be identified.

Storage of data
Data relating to the project will be retained for a minimum of five years, per research requirements. The raw data will be stored in a secure location able to be accessed only by the research team.
After it is no longer required, all data will be destroyed in a secure manner.

Results
Results of the study and overall project will be published through academic and professional journals and conferences. Results will be made available to participants upon their request. Participants need to contact the project investigators listed above to request results.
