Developing Pedagogy in A-Level Work Group 2020 - 2021
COVID Catch Up Session
We expect all Post 16 Providers will be planning some form of COVID-19 recovery for Year 13 and this session is a chance for all Post 16 teachers of mathematics to share and brainstorm ideas. We will also be discussing the use of multiple choice questions to gain feedback on knowledge (including some time to write some and share with other delegates). I will also share some of my favourite Desmos activities for student practice and revision

When: Thursday 17th September 2020 16:00-17:30 via Zoom. Information will be emailed to delegates prior.

The A-Level Pedagogy Work Group will be a forum of local Post-16 mathematics educators where we develop our practice, share ideas, and consider relevant educational research. It is suitable for all teachers of A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, including those who took part in the Pedagogy or Technology Work Groups last year. Where examples are taken from Further Mathematics there will also be some subject knowledge enhancement work depending on the needs of the group.

The 6 twilight session dates are as followed:

Thursday 1st October 2020 16.00-18.00
Topic: Working memory. We will consider the research around working memory and explore the impact of this on one topic from AS Level mathematics. How an understanding of working memory can support the development of problem-solving skills.

Thursday 15th October 2020 16.00-18.00
Topic: Direct Instruction. We will be exploring aspects of Direct Instruction, including looking at the work of Engelmann and the ideas of atomisation and covertization.

Thursday 23th November 2020 16.00-18.00
Topic: Variation Theory and Mastery Learning. We will consider the use of variation theory, purposeful practice and how the mastery approach can be applied in post-16 learning.

Thursday 11th January 2021 16.00-18.00
Topic: Statistics and the Large Data Set. In this session we will consider best practice for the use of the Large Data set within the teaching of the statistics component of A-Level Mathematics.

Thursday 8th February 2021 16.00-18.00
Topic: Mechanics. For many teachers, teaching mechanics will be a new challenge and in this session we will look at ways to bring this topic to life. Building student’s intuition with mechanics is key to success and often practical activities are very successful at achieving this.

Thursday 15th March 2021 16.00-18.00
Topic: Scaffolding and Problem Solving. What are the best approaches to scaffolding for A-Level mathematics? What works and what doesn’t? How to use scaffolding to develop truly independent mathematicians.

Sessions prior to Christmas will definitely take place via zoom (with information emailed to delegates prior to the session). When you sign up please could you let us know what exam specifications you use.

If face to face events can start any time again, such as in the new year the twilight sessions will be held at George Spencer Academy, Toton, NG9 7JA

COVID-19 Recovery
The ongoing impact of the corona virus outbreak and knock on effects on schools life remain uncertain. So, all Maths Hubs work will adapt to changing realities. There's likely to be more live online collaboration, for example. In addition Work Groups content will address both schools recovery from corona virus related disruption and the central maths subject matter of each project.
