Speculative Poetry Workshop with Richard Leis of The Writers Studio
Saturday, January 30, 2021, 6:00pm Arizona/MST - Online - a fundraiser for the Tucson Poetry Festival

Imagine writing more in the new year! In this 1-hour workshop, Richard Leis and Reneé Bibby of The Writers Studio Tucson will lead a speculative poetry exercise. Suggested Donation: $10 - $25

Your favorite writers of speculative literature (including science fiction, fantasy, and horror) use narrative techniques like persona narrators, point of view, mood, and tone as well as worldbuilding to craft fantastic and imaginative worlds that parallel, reflect, and critique our own real world. Together, we'll take a look at a short speculative poem and study some of the elements of craft the poet uses, and then you'll start writing your own speculative poem based on these techniques! Near the end of the workshop, there will be an opportunity for attendees to share what they wrote.

The Tucson branch of The Writers Studio operates like our flagship New York City school — with the same workshop model designed to help students discover and nurture their own voices by “trying on” many approaches to fiction and poetry. The Writers Studio Tucson welcomes students at all stages. The Writers Studio also offers many online classes, including "Crafting Fantastic and Imaginative Worlds" taught by Richard Leis.
