Dear Principal,
A teacher at your school site is applying for ATLUS: Advancing Teacher Leadership in Urban Schools through SDSU’s Noyce Mathematics OR Science Master Teaching Fellowship Program. The goals of this prestigious fellowship are
•
to support effective teachers of mathematics and science to enrich their practice so that they can emerge into extraordinary teachers, and
•
to support these teachers in becoming teacher leaders who then support student teachers, teachers at their school site, and teachers in the broader community.
If the teacher at your site is selected as a Master Teaching Fellow (MTF), that teacher will lead the development and implementation of a school-site plan to improve the mathematics or science learning of your students, through a two-year continuous improvement cycle. A National Science Foundation grant will pay for substitute teachers for the 3 days per year that the MTF will be out of the classroom for professional learning experiences. As part of the learning cycle, other MTFs will visit your school and classrooms.
Additionally, MTFs will meet for 5-6 weeks during each summer and will meet regularly on evenings for the entire five years of the program. We expect that the support MTFs receive will not only support the MTFs’ learning and that of the MTFs’ students, but also the learning of other teachers and their students, through this model of developing teacher leaders.
You are welcome to contact the project leader, Dr. Lisa Lamb,
Lisa.Lamb@sdsu.edu with any questions. MTFs will receive an annual stipend for their participation, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
