About
Disability representation has been lacking in the outdoors for too long. Disabled Hikers is working to change that, and you can help. Your story matters! Our community wants to know it.
Are you chronically ill, disabled, mad, neurodivergent, D/deaf, b/Blind, or otherwise face access barriers in the outdoors? We wholeheartedly welcome your unique perspective and invite you to share your authentic experiences and thoughts with our community. Help us elevate disability representation beyond the "inspirational" and into the nuanced reality of our lives.
Topics
We are primarily looking for personal narrative with an informative angle. Topics may revolve around disability, chronic illness, hiking and the outdoors, or the environment - whether it's an individual experience or a broader discussion on access, exclusion, ableism, and justice. However, we are not looking for stories that center around inspirational narratives of overcoming disability.
Format
Whether you write a powerful blog post, record a compelling video, create an engaging photo essay, or any other creative format, we're here to support you throughout the process.
Thanks to support from the Land Trust Alliance, we offer a stipend of $25 for a social media post and $100 for a blog post.
Together, let's build a diverse collection of stories to amplify historically excluded voices and foster inclusion within the outdoors. If you’re interested in participating, please fill out the Google form on our website, and we will get in touch with you. Visit our blog for more examples, and remember if this form isn’t accessible to you, we have you covered. Reach out to info@disabledhikers.com and we’ll find a way to ensure access.
