Shelbyville ISD has proactively responded to the COVID-19 Pandemic since the first on-set in March of 2020. Some actions that the District has put into place and continues to review and revise are listed below. As a parent, student, school employee, and/or community representative, we would like your input as to additional action that you see as necessary to improve our response efforts. Please review and complete the attached survey to share your input. As always, we appreciate your support and involvement in our school district.
• Two additional buses purchased for bus routes, to allow for social distancing as needed
• Two additional maintenance personnel, hired to improve sanitization and cleanliness of facilities
• Two additional school nurses (LVN) hired to accommodate health services on each campus
• Health supplies (set-up for new nurses, personal protective equipment, thermometers, temperature scanners, gloves, etc.)
• Maintenance supplies (sanitizing and cleaning)
• Hiring additional technology personnel to improve preparedness for school closure and on-line learning
• Purchasing educational technology (hardware, software, and connectivity)
• Fund counseling personnel to address mental health services and supports and address learning loss among students, including providing information and assistance to parents and families on effectively supporting students
• Providing summer school and extended day (after-school) services and programs to address learning loss and needs of students from all populations
• High quality assessments used to determine and address loss of learning of all students, especially special populations
• Intervention teachers and educational aides to address loss of learning by implementing evidence-based activities to meet comprehensive needs of students
• Teachers and educational aides engagement in distance learning, home-based learners including tracking attendance and improving student engagement in effective learning
• Facility repairs and improvements to enable operation of schools to reduce risk of virus transmission and exposure to environmental health hazards including replacing flooring with epoxy flooring in high school and middle school and elementary school classrooms and extending elementary front canopy to allow more social distancing during morning and afternoon drop-off/pickup
• Improve indoor air quality in buildings by replacing some HVAC units and providing air purifiers and fans in classrooms and offices
• Implementing public health protocols including temperature scanners, social distance barriers, masks, and other health supplies
• Employing substitute teachers and other substitute personnel when personnel are absent as a result of sickness or quarantine due to COVID-19
• Providing one-time retention/recruitment stipends to all personnel for their efforts to keep the district functioning at a high level during the pandemic and to allow the district to continue to recruit and retain high quality personnel
• Providing stipends to teachers who complete Reading Academies to better address loss of learning in students
• Supplement budget in order to continue operations and continuing of employment of existing staff
• Updated/improved playgrounds/outdoor learning areas to provide social distancing and outdoor classrooms
• Purchased additional classroom library materials to encourage student reading and boost literacy
• Additional professional development opportunities for teachers and staff to improve ability to address loss of learning and mental health issues
