The very charismatic Mai Nimani is a fabulous
folk artist from Sindh, who hails from the traditional Bhaatt tribe
of musicians. The Bhaatts, belonging to the Hindu community of Pakistan today,
used to be the court musicians and bards during the Rajput era of Northwest
India. Mai Nimani’s husky voice has both soul and melody and her repertoire
consists of devotional Sufi kalams, Bhakti bhajans, as well as folk songs in
Sindhi, Marwari, Saraiki, Punjabi and Urdu/Hindi languages, which she
regularly performs at various festivals and shrines in Sindh. Since the
passing of her late husband and teacher, Mai Nimani is now accompanied by her
brother-in-law on harmonium and her sons on dholak and percussion.
It is also
important to mention that the hereditary tribe of Bhaatt musicians
from Sindh are now endangered due to loss of livelihood, and successive
climate disasters, with Mai Nimani's family also losing their houses in the
recent floods. Therefore, we would also like to encourage our guests to
participate in the donation that will contribute towards rebuilding their
homes.
