California Youth Leadership Corps- De Anza College Fall 2024 - Spring 2025 Application  

The California Youth Leadership Corps (CYLC) is a transformative program designed to empower individuals from diverse and nontraditional backgrounds to create social change and make a positive impact on their communities. Our program spans three academic quarters, from Fall 2024 to Spring 2025, offering participants the opportunity to earn a Certificate in Leadership and Social Change from De Anza College, along with a total of 18 college credits.

  • Fall Quarter: September 23rd - December 13th, 2024

    • Leadership and Power (ICS27/POLY17)

  • Winter Quarter: January 6th - March 28th, 2025

    • Critical Consciousness and Social Change (ICS 17)

  • Spring Quarter: April 7th - June 27th, 2025

    • Making a Difference: Transforming Relations of Nature, Community, and Power (ICS 19)
    • Instructor: Staff (TBA)
    • Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm (via Zoom)

In addition to the core classes mentioned above, participants will engage in a 2-unit asynchronous internship class during each quarter, allowing them to gain hands-on experience at a community site of their choice from a provided list. The expectation is approximately 10 hours of commitment per week for the community internship through out the entire duration of the program.

During the program, students will receive mentor support and engage in a community internship, check ins with the mentor and program staff that will provide opportunities for personal growth and practical application of knowledge.

We will be hosting a Summer Bridge Program, to bring together the cohort and get students, (especially non-traditional students) familiar with the program. We will also be offering support with technical skills and try to problem solve any obstacle you might encounter.

We will also be having a welcome dinner before we start the Fall Semester to get to know the mentors and connect with them.

Participants have the opportunity to earn up to $10,000 for their active involvement in the program. Additionally, they will have their educational expenses covered, as well as the chance to receive a completion bonus. The total benefits received, including earnings, educational support, and bonuses can be up to $15,000!

ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

Participation in the California Youth Leadership Corps (CYLC) involves dedication and commitment to meeting the following requirements:

  • Be a nontraditional student or from a historically marginalized background.
  • Attend the CYLC summer bridge workshops to prepare for the program.
  • Attend Family Night- Thursday September 12, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at De Anza College.
  • Participate in empathy training sessions weekly, starting from Week 3 of each quarter.
  • Meet with the assigned mentor every other week to receive guidance and support.
  • Maintain regular communication with the mentor team to address any concerns or issues.
  • Meet with CYLC program staff at least once a month throughout each quarter to discuss progress and address any concerns.
  • Attend classes as regularly as possible and actively participate in discussions and activities.
  • Communicate promptly with program staff if there are any challenges or issues affecting attendance or participation.
  • Apply for FAFSA or the California Dream Act application, if eligible.
  • Maintain a timesheet to record the hours spent working at the assigned community site and engaging with mentors.
  • Effectively communicate by checking email regularly and promptly responding to program-related communication.
  • Complete pre- and post-program surveys
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Immigration status does not affect eligibility.

By meeting these requirements, participants can fully engage in the CYLC program and benefit from the opportunities for personal and community growth.
