On March 26, 2018, 8-year-old Monty Spencer found himself trapped on the fourth floor of a burning apartment building in Gary, Indiana. He made his way through the thick, choking smoke to a window, and saw a crowd of people outside who were encouraging him to jump. The people below had gathered some blankets and made a makeshift safety net. “At first he didn’t trust us,” said a neighbor, who helped coordinate the effort. But then Monty heard his mother’s voice. “My momma told me to jump out of the window, and I did. So I listened to my momma, and they caught me, and then that’s when I survived,” he said. Trust can be a powerful thing. In many cases, it is all that stands between life and death.
