Join our Methods Fellow, Amira Moeding in a workshop which introduces methods of historical enquiry into the development of digital technologies and digital data. What can the history of "Big Data" tells us about artificial intelligence today? What were seen as the pitfalls and problems with biases early on in the development of data-driven research?
Together with you Amira will employ methods of historical enquiry to gain a better understanding of the origin of ‘data-driven’ digital technologies. Thereby, the workshop attempts to bring about insight into these methods possibilities and limitations. The workshop asks how it became clear to some engineers already in the 1980s that applications based on data would work better for hegemonic populations and investigates the motivations that led engineers to build these applications anyhow. Finally, we will enquire how those methods and developments might be linked to concerns surrounding todays large language models.
