All SCCDSB Virtual Sessions begin Sept 21 through to Oct 1. Register here for Personal Learning and Classroom Learning Sessions. There are a range of sessions that are open to multiple audiences. Register for as many as you can!

All Board Staff can sign up for ANY AND ALL sessions, including classroom sessions. Please let cortnee.goure@sccdsb.net know if you require any accommodations.

They have an amazing line up of sessions daily for all audiences. The SCCDSB hosted sessions below are geared to not overlap these sessions for the grade levels where possible.

Sessions for Staff, Parents, Community - Jenny Kay Dupuis: Breaking the Silence - Acknowledging the Truth and Empowering Diverse Community Voices: Teaching, Telling, and Hearing Difficult Stories    
Jenny Kay will share her reflections on working with family, community, and the literary world to tell the story of her granny’s experience at a residential school. She will also share her knowledge of the power of teaching, telling, and hearing difficult stories, including ones that focus on the realities of diversity, human rights, and social justice issues through diverse literature.
Join us virtually as Jenny Kay Dupuis shares her journey behind what inspired and motivated her to break the silence and create the best-selling children’s book, I Am Not a Number.  Included in the discussion will also be what's next for Jenny Kay - a series of Woodland Pop Art works and a new children's picture book to be released in 2022/2023. Following the guest speaker, you will have the opportunity to ask questions.  These sessions are not recorded. Both the sessions will be similar but geared to different audiences. Session 1 on Sept 21 will be geared to staff. Session 2 on Sept 28 will be geared to parents/community and staff are welcome if they couldn't make it Sept 21.

Staff, Parent & Community Session:  Approaches for parents, families, and community members to consider for their own learning journey, and how to support difficult conversations when sharing stories that focus on the realities of human rights and social justice issues through diverse children's literature. (Staff who joined Jenny's first session Sept 21: this is a similar session to Jenny's first session, but geared to parents, please register if you missed Sept 21).

Staff, Parent, and Community Session - Biindigaygizhig, Chippewas of the Thames First Nation: Learning the Impacts - Building Understanding of the Impacts of the Residential School System and Thinking about Action
Join us virtually as Biindigaygizhig shares about the residential school system and its impacts, past present, and future.  Learn the impacts on the individual, the family, the community, and the country.  Reflect upon how to approach conversations with youth and how to talk about true reconciliation along with Indigenous and non-Indigenous responsibilities. Part 1 and 2 Staff and Classroom Sessions with the Woodland Cultural Centre
Geared to grades 7 - 12 audience. Great for any staff member to join. You do not need to participate in part 1 to participate in part 2. These sessions are not recorded.
Truth & Recognition: The goal of the Truth & Reconciliation presentation is about raising awareness of the tragic history of the residential school system. This session examines the history and policies that lead to the creation of the Residential Schools, their legacies, how they have impacted Indigenous people, and why truth and reconciliation is important.

 Woodland Cultural Centre: Mohawk Institute Tour & Live Q&A The tour is filmed and edited by “Thru the Red Door”, former Education Tour Coordinator, Lorrie Gallant guides the viewer around the former Mohawk Institute Residential School. Lorrie provides the history of the institution 140 years of operation. Viewers will see the different rooms from the girls’ and boys’ dormitories, the cafeteria, laundry room, and other rooms throughout the building. Video includes interviews with five Survivors.

Learning Before Truth & Reconciliation Week
These sessions are designed to get thinking before Truth & Reconciliation Week. Geared to grades 3 - 12 audience. Great for any staff member to join.
Grades 3 to 12 Session - Theland Kicknosway, Bkejwanong Territory, Youth Action: Join Theland and learn about his journey as he inspires youth to get involved in raising awareness and educating others.

Painting Session with Moses Lunham, Kettle and Stony Point First Nation - Art to Inspire Action: Join Moses as he teaches students to paint a Truth and Reconciliation inspired painting.  Through painting and storytelling, students learn about residential schools and the importance of learning and journeying together. (View at a time that is best for you over the week). Materials: red, blue, yellow, white, black, orange paint; canvas, primed cardstock, or heavy paper, paintbrush.
Learning First Hand with Local Partners
These sessions are designed to be in addition to the daily events hosted by the NCTR which begins at 11am daily. Local connections with community and first hand sharing of experiences. Geared to grades 7 - 12 audience. Great for any staff member to join.

Secondary Session with Isaac Murdoch. This session is hosted by Jodie Williams, DPCDSB. Students have the opportunity to hear from Isaac Murdoch about the important connections between colonialism, resource extraction and climate change. He will explain how the Indian Residential School system was part of a targeted and systemic effort, through the Indian Act,  to eliminate Indigenous peoples and cultures. He will examine how our collective efforts, roles and responsibilities can make positive change moving forward. Q & A will follow.

K - 5 Sessions
These sessions will be pre-recorded and available all throughout the week of Sept 27 - Oct 1. Sessions will be geared to speak to K-2 and Grades 3-5 classrooms in an age appropriate manner. Open to all staff.
