Pop-up shelter volunteer assistance

Goodwill has opened a temporary emergency shelter for the severe weather from 12/22 through 12/26 at Broadbent Arena in the Louisville Fairgrounds. Entry is Gate 4, lot J, door B1. They are offering meals and offering showers, toiletries, and snacks. Stefphan Gholston is the point person and can be reached at (502) 715-6379.

Stefphan needs volunteers who are skilled in homeless services or residential settings to be sure he can take breaks and provide the shelter supports needed. Volunteers must be 21+ and can come for shifts of any length (2-3 hours or more) any time through Monday 12/26 (with a special need being overnight support). These volunteers will be doing intensive shelter work like monitoring bathrooms, cleaning up syringes, passing out contraceptives, noticing the signs of overdose, serving food, canvassing hallways, and potential conflict resolution.

They are also seeking donations of bedding, toiletries, water, hygiene items, first aid kids, and sharps containers, as well as seeking restaurant partners to help provide meals for up to 100 guests three meals a day through Monday (which Feed Louisville is helping to coordinate: text 502-593-6677).
