Campaign 2000 is a national non-partisan coalition which came together 30 years ago with the goal of ending child and family poverty. Since Summer 2020, we have been working with partners from across the country to advocate for a Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) repayment amnesty for people living on low incomes who received any pandemic benefits such as Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) but were later found to be ineligible.
Low-income families and individuals have since been notified that they would be required to payback these benefits if they were found ineligible or to have received an overpayment. Absent amnesty, collections and recovery could go on
for years especially if repayments terms require low monthly payments.
We have also been working to ensure all clawed back funds from other benefits such as social and disability assistance, rent supplements, Guaranteed Income Support (GIS), child benefits, and worker benefits are returned to recipients living on low incomes and immediately ending all current and future claw backs on these benefits.
We have met with individuals, advocates, politicians, policymakers, and journalists from across the country about this issue, and one thing is clear: they need to hear your story. Through individuals sharing their stories, we've seen success on a number of fronts, from the self-employed, to students, to seniors, and are continuing to work towards CERB repayment amnesty for all people living on low-incomes.
