Retrofit bulk purchase interest questionnaire
Loco Home Retrofit and Strathbungo Eco Group hope to coordinate the bulk purchase and implementation of energy saving home improvements, from insulation and windows to heat pumps and solar panels. This form briefly describes what each improvement may entail and asks whether you would be interested in receiving more information.

All measures we support must be suitable for the property, of high quality, and independently inspected.
The Sustainable Renovation Guide provides useful background on most of the measures suggested here: https://www.thepebbletrust.org/sustainablerenovation.asp

None of the below should be read as advice, we hope to find competent professionals who can provide proper advice. Some things may be expensive to do properly, we hope to make doing things properly more affordable and accessible through bulk purchasing.

Information provided on this form will be used solely for the purpose of communication around the coordination of bulk purchases that you express interest in, unless you explicitly ask for it to be used for other purposes. Note that expressing interest here does commit you to future participation. All questions are optional.

Template works plans
Loco Home Retrofit hopes to commission template works plans: detailed reports on how to take the different types of properties originally constructed in Strathbungo from their original condition, to close to current best practice, while preserving heritage features. These would include detailed installation diagrams for each measure, scheduling, estimated costs, and recommended materials etc.

Lower temperature/more efficient heating
Most existing condensing gas boilers are installed incorrectly such that they operate 5-10% less efficiently than they should. Changing settings on the boiler, correctly wiring the existing thermostat, or installing a good OpenTherm thermostat can be a low cost improvement. In some cases replacing some of the central heating pipework with larger diameter pipes or some of the radiators with larger radiators may help achieve higher efficiency and comfort. A heat calculation can determine what sizes of pipes and radiators are required for each room for maximum efficiency.

Underfloor insullation
Most Strathbungo Gardens and Squares houses may be suited to underfloor insulation along with ground floor Tenements. Underfloor insulation can make a huge difference to comfort by keeping your feet warm and make a big improvement to efficiency. High quality air tight installation and hydroscopic materials are crucial to avoiding damp issues while achieving high efficiency. Any improvements to pipework and electrical cabling should be completed first.

Loft insulation
Many properties in Strathbungo already have some loft insulation but bringing this up to a high standard with proper thickness, removal of cold bridges, and air tightness with suitable materials can improve efficiency further and be relatively cheap. Any improvements to pipework and electrical cabling should be completed first.

Windows
Better windows can make a huge difference to comfort and efficiency by cutting out drafts and improving insulation. Original single glazed sash and case windows can be improved, and outside the conservation area, replaced. High efficiency Passivhaus standard triple glazing is expensive but can make a big difference to comfort and efficiency, particularly compared with single glazing. If you're willing to spend extra for triple glazing then it may be worth also installing good wall insulation to get the full benefit as this will minimise thermal bridges around the window frame. Some improvements (e.g. low-e film, which can be stuck to windows to reduce heat loss) are straightforward for DIY.

Wall insulation
The white rear walls of the red sandstone Gardens houses have cavity walls which may be suitable for cavity fill insulation (some such properties have already had cavity wall insulation installed).
The white walls of red sandstone Gardens houses, and possibly some rear walls in the Squares or tenements may be suitable for external wall insulation and many extensions will also be suitable for external wall insulation. This may require extending roofs slightly.
Where external or cavity wall insulation is not possible, internal wall insulation may be suitable. It is helpful to schedule this at the same time as window replacement or room redecoration (can be done one room at a time) to minimise disruption.

Heating systems
Heat pumps are much more efficient than gas boilers (can be 400% efficient as drawing heat from air or ground) but are expensive and should be installed after first improving insulation so that their size can be minimised. Emergency replacement of gas boilers with heat pumps when the boiler fails is difficult and advanced planning is required so it is useful to get ready for a heat pump well before you need one. District heating systems are also possible (where hot water from a shared heat source is piped to the property rather than gas for individual boilers). Also ground sources can be networked and shared by several properties including flats.
Interested in better heating systems?
Ventilation
As drafts are reduced by better windows and insulation to provide proper air tightness, planned ventilation is required. Trickle vents on windows may be sufficient but some people may want/need some sort of mechanical ventilation system, such as a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which swaps the air for fresh filtered air while retaining the heat.

Solar panels
Three Strathbungo properties currently have solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity-producing panels or solar thermal (heat-producing) panels. Non-listed buildings in the conservation area can have panels installed on rear facing roofs, outside the conservation area both front and rear facing roofs may be eligible.
