Schools, youth groups, community groups and landowners are invited to tackle Northern Ireland’s lack of woodland cover by getting their hands dirty and planting thousands of trees.

Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) have just about 8 per cent woodland cover, compared to the European average of 44 per cent. So, what are you waiting for get in touch to grab your free trees! The trees must be planted within the AONB boundaries. You can view the boundary by clicking here or download the maps below.

Once your trees are in the ground it’s important to care for them to help them thrive, particularly in the first few years. Please tell us specifically who will be taking responsibility for their ongoing care and maintenance and your plan for looking after the trees. Please state how many trees you require? We have a max limit of 500 trees per order. We only have a limited number of trees and it is first come, first served basis. Other tree projects, include the Woodland Trust MOREwoods, MOREhedges , Trees on our land,  Small Woodland Grant Scheme or the Forest Expansion Scheme. If you require support applying for these projects, contact info@ringofgullion.org for more information.

Please check how much room you need for the trees before you submit your order.

The amount of space you need will differ depending on how you plant your trees. If in doubt order a lower number of trees, as you can always apply for more in future delivery seasons.

The Woodland Trust recommend planting about two metres apart, but you can plant 1-5m apart depending on your space and plan. If you’re planting a single hedge, place trees 30cm apart. For a thick hedge, plant a double row of trees in a zig zag pattern. Space your rows 50cm apart, with 40-45cm between each tree.

A 30 sapling pack will cover around one tennis court, or create 6-8 metres of double-row hedging. A 105 sapling pack will cover 4 tennis courts, or create a double-row hedgerow of 20-25 metres. A 420 sapling pack will cover a football pitch, or create a double-row hedgerow of 85-100 metres.
