This is the third and final session in the GSDM Symposium series: "Humanitarian crises and COVID-19".
The topic is: "Planning how we can prevent future humanitarian crises by building a new, resilient social system and cooperating across the globe".

It is an honour to welcome Mariko Hayashi as keynote speaker. Ms. Hayashi has over 10 years of experience working in the civil society sector involved in national, regional and international human rights advocacy with a focus on migration. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Southeast and East Asian Centre (SEEAC), a London based civil society and community organisation led by and for migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum from Southeast and East Asian countries. She is a co-founder of BEBESEA (Better Engagement between East and Southeast Asia), a cross-regional network of civil society actors advocating for the rights of migrants and intersectional human rights in East and Southeast Asia. She is also a freelance project coordinator, consultant and researcher working with a number of NGOs in the UK and Asia-Pacific, and serves as a trustee of Kanlungan Filipino Consortium and Protection Approaches. Ms. Hayashi previously worked as a Program Officer at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in Tokyo.  

Professor Toshiro Nishizawa will be the discussant during this event. Mr. Nishizawa has been a full-time faculty member of The University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) since July 2013 after serving at the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). Early in his career, he spent years working at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IMF, and the World Bank. Prof. Nishizawa has been actively engaged in policy dialogue and research activities with his interests in Asian economies, financing for development, Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), and sovereign debt. He holds a BA in Latin American studies from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (1982), a BA in economics from the University of Tokyo (1984), and an MSc in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1988).
