What is a state of WA ID# / WDL? Why do I need it and how do I get it?

This # is the number issued to you by the state of WA that follows you through your licensing process; it becomes your permit # and then your driver’s license #. It is 12 digits long, a mix of letters and numbers.

This number will be in one of the following formats:

1) If you obtained a WA State ID/Permit/License before 2018, this number will start with the first 5 (five) letters of your last name, ex: LASTNFN123AB

2) If you obtained a WA State ID/Permit/License in 2018 or after, this number will start with the letters WDL, ex: WDLABCD123YZ.

Some customers already have a WA State ID card (usually obtained for use as ID when traveling out of the country.) If so, the PIC # from that card is the number that we need. (It will also be one of the two formats above)

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS number, you will need to "PRE-APPLY" on the State of WA Dept of Licensing website BEFORE you sign up for this test. This is about a 10 minute process, no special documents required. (HERE is a link: https://secure.dol.wa.gov/home/serviceType.aspx# ).

We will need this number in order for you to qualify to take your DOL Written Test and/or DOL Driving Test.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THE TEST WITHOUT THIS NUMBER.

Before you register, please make sure you have this number. Keep this number in a safe place, you will be asked to provide it when you sign up for all DOL tests.
